I don't completely agree with this statement, though:

"When we vilify candidates other than the one we choose, we're hurting ourselves in the long run because we cannot KNOW who may or may not have the wherewithal to do what needs to be done."

We shouldn't *vilify*, but we must not lose our confidence in ourselves to see through empty rhetoric. Some candidates are more corporately beholden than others! And history has shown that too much ill-considered followership leads to a loss of freedom. Input from the grassroots (some see them as the unwashed and illiterate masses) is the lifeblood of our democracy!
