14. Mom might not want to be shielded from the event
so please ask her whether or not she wants to hold her best friend and say goodbye. The process is a very peaceful one, just an IV insertion, a syringe of phenobarb, and a last sigh as the dog passes out of pain.

I've insisted on holding animals I've had to have put down. I've always thought I'd have a calming effect on them and that I owed it to them for those years of unconditional affection.

It's only later that I've felt like a murderess, wondering if a few more days filled with pain might have been worth it for the animal. However, animals themselves tell us when they've had enough, and my animals had done so.

Anyway, your mom needs to make the choice. Some people just can't stand it. Others want to say goodbye.
