I think the rwing has painted liberals as people aiding and abetting the "shiftless welfare queens driving Caddys"--read that African-Americans--yes, it is tapping into the racism that is just underneath the surface of our country. Reagan was a master of doing this, and it was under him that making "liberal" a dirty word started.
