The Thrill Is Gone

I swore off GD: P a couple days ago, so I'm trying to get back into pre-primary mode. I've been to see Keith Olbermann's special comment, I went to read Bush's speech in which he accuses Obama of being a latter-day Hitler appeaser, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around Bush calling upon the people of India and China to eat less food cause if they eat like we eat then we won't be able to eat like we eat any more, and since only one populous nation can afford to gorge itself at the trough it should be us...and you'd think all that would be, you know, inspiring.

But somehow it's not happening. I look at Bush, and instead of the old fire in the belly, I just feel sort of a combination of pity and disgust.

He's over. Sure, the 2008 presidential race could still be FUBARed to the point where we might be stuck with a McCain presidency, and about that I certainly am still very exercised. But when it comes to Bush himself...he's just a sad, sad, crazy little man still trying to make himself feel relevant at a time when all the people around him have already written *his* epitaph and are now working on how best to save their own asses. Sure, he's still the POTUS--well, as much as he ever was. But seriously, when's the last time anyone paid any real attention to him? Olbermann is probably the first pundit in a long time to actually give a shit about anything Bush has said recently. And really, "shut the hell up" is about the only response most of what comes out of Bush these days deserves. Go away, little man. Your work here is done. Now the adults are busy working on how to fix all the shit you broke.

I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy seeing him leave office a few months ahead of schedule, or that I won't rejoice and be glad when he finally leaves, or that I'm done holding him responsible for all the crap that's happened here and around the world because of his insane troll presidency. I guess I just figure he's already on the way to his own little hell, so why not just get out of his way.

What most toddlers really want most, apart from their own way, is attention. Bush always seemed to me like the toddler president--tantrum-throwing, narcissistic, emotionally immature, hitting when he got mad, and just intelligent enough to really trash the place. So it cheers me up to see him finally dropping out of the headlines, subsiding into the oblivion I'm sure he hates. I bet he's being extra-imperious to his staff to make up for it. "I want TWO grilled cheese sandwiches! And make sure you cut the crusts off neatly this time!"

It will be a good feeling when he's finally out of office. Till then, really, he may as well get back out on the golf course, cause nothing else he does is going to be any more meaningful than getting onto the green in 3.

C ya,

The Plaid Adder
