I was a fan of Will Pitt's early-on, having discovered him in Truthout.
I found my way here sometime in 2001, fairly early I think, in a link at a site called "Resident bush," which I'd found at Buzzflash. I remember being so timid. People were already raging away and I was nervous about stepping in. For awhile I wasn't even ready to utter any four-letter words (Wheee! Look at me now!). At the time I remember lurking and noticing a post every so often that started with "I'm new..." so I posted one myself as soon as I was able to, and I've been roaring ever since!
I can remember being surprised and thrilled to find a haven on the net - where there were so many other people who felt the same way I did about Selection 2000 (our main gripe back then). It was the first time I'd felt validated outside my own circle of family and friends - who were all feeling rather battered after that awful election. And it was impossible to express just how much that meant to me. The solidarity and sympathy helped make that horrible time somewhat more bearable.
And I immediately started reading, and learning, and linking, and becoming far more educated and aware. It's from hanging around DU. And I've learned some other things like using smilies and stuff, too - plus, it's been a real revelation to access so many other sources of info. Newspapers and other sites I'd never even dreamed existed.
DU, :yourock: :toast:
