They do hedge their bets. I've heard them around here, before they do something that crosses the line, say, "Oh, a judge would never expect a common citizen to know so and so." I wouldn't be surprised if this woman felt emboldened because she was a woman and thought she could get away with things that a man wouldn't get away with.
