Or, if the scammers take it as an indication that someone's on to them, they may just decide to cut their losses, drop it, and move on. Still, even looking into where the check was deposited or cashed will at least tell her who and where these people are. I'm guessing she's not someone who routinely has a spare three grand lying around, so why not try to at least sort this out?
