It's a horrifying thought: dozens of dogs that need new homes after being found on the side of the road. Now, it's reality in Meriwether County.

"That hurts my heart," says Meriwether County Animal Shelter director Sandy Wood, "because the animals just don't deserve it."

Last month Animal Control found 34 Chow Chows in three separate spots across the area. Nine of them had been run over and killed.

Wood suspects a local breeder of having too many dogs and just, simply, getting rid of them on the highway. The case is under investigation by the county district attorney; no charges have been filed.
