Calvert County police shot and killed a roving emu on Thursday after roughly nine weeks of hunting the 6-foot-tall wild bird. No one has come forward to claim the animal.

County residents began reporting emu sightings in early November. Police cautioned residents not to go near the bird, which can run up to 30 miles per hour and uses knife-like toenails to defend itself.
