EU Takes Aim at Sensitive U.S. Products

Wed Nov 17,11:31 AM ET Business - AP

By PAUL GEITNER, AP Business Writers

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union (news - web sites) said Wednesday it has selected U.S. products to punish with tariffs next year if Washington doesn't quickly repeal an antidumping law ruled illegal by the World Trade Organization (news - web sites).

The list submitted to the WTO this week targets "vocal U.S. sectors that could help Congress focus its mind on compliance," said EU trade spokeswoman Arancha Gonzalez.

The products include textiles, sweet corn — aimed at farmers — and heavy machinery made by companies like Caterpillar Inc., which is based in Illinois, the home state of U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Bush doesn't rule the world yet!!!

3. This is what Americans want, presumably, if you believe our WH media
So, tough shit! To the economy. All those selfish little "I'm comfortable, what's the problem?" Republicans are about to get a dose of reality.

5. I know it's going to suck for ALL of us
unfortunately. But it looks like this kind of thing is the only way dumb-ass Bush supporters are going to learn. I hope the EU boycotts all kinds of American products and really makes America suffer. The slack-jawed morons that voted for him might finally get it when they can't afford their McMansions and Planet-Mobiles anymore.

7. maybe
I'm not very informed, but I never liked the idea of World Trade Organization. NAFTA is a mistake in my book also.

Can anyone tell me how they benefit us?

10. its BS. The EU is no more "fair" than China
Both are a rigged game, desired by multinational corporations
who play boths sides of the equation.

Number one are organizations like Citigroup and Goldman Sachs,
who go in and buy up/invest in the 3rd world countries that just
got the trade agreement. Look at their investments in China.

In Mexico, NAFTA has proven to not only not help the US but also
not help Mexican workers...one of the reasons we have a tidal
wave of illegal immigrants..working conditions/wages there suck.

But people believing the EU plays "nice" are really naive.

This is a trade war where the ones that lose everytime are the American people. The trade policies are horrific. The EU has protectionist
stances and China is extremely guilty of WTO violations.

But, it's a rigged game...a closed organization where the US is one
vote out of 23...no veto vote so easily other nations can "gang up"
on the US and vote against the US over and over.

The key here is what the Chimp does..which is nothing but negotiate
more ridiculous trade agreements that only benefits multinational
corporations and special interests.

3rd world gang, here we come.

I remember when I first heard of them forming the EU, thinking it was being done to fight the US.

Now that all those little country's have formed their 'EU'. they should only get one vote. Unless they want to give us 50. It is not fair for them to act as one large block, but get to vote individually. We don't stand a chance...ever..

8. In my view, the real story is is the birth of the world's next superpower
In many ways, getting the EU into a single, cohesive politcal bloc was a lot like herding cats. The nationalism, different cultures, etc.

But it seems Chimpus Khan really *is* a uniter. And to think these are our staunchest allies!

We be deep in doo doo ........
