Wash. Candidate for Gov. Has Mastectomy (Gregoire)
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The state's attorney general, who is also the front-running Democratic candidate for governor, was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy, a spokesman said Friday.

Christine Gregoire, 56, underwent surgery on Thursday and was released from a hospital Friday, said attorney general spokesman Fred Olson.

A lump was found in Gregoire's left breast during a recent mammogram. Her entire left breast was removed by surgeons, and subsequent tests showed no spread of the cancer.

Gregoire will spend about a week at home recovering, but expects to continue with her duties as both attorney general and a candidate, Olson said.

"I plan to press on, just as many women have done before me," she said.

1. Gregoire will do just fine
I don't think this little setback should define her candidacy for the Governorship. She is a fine woman and qualified to kick butt in the 2004 election.

After all, the Pugs in WA state can't seem to find ANYONE anyone with a matching pair of brain cells that is qualified to run, much less anyone that even wants to!

2. Been there, done that
I know exactly what kind she had; it's call in situ (sp?)..it means it's in the ducts, and never got out, thus can't spread. She elected a masectomy. I elected to get rid of both of them (hey the new boobs they gave me look a hell of a lot better and bigger than the ones I gave away). I didn't have to have any chemo or anything else and neither will she; I've had no come back after 7 years and neither will she because this is considered 99% curable. It's when it leaves the ducts that it is another ball game. It's a shame that there are going to be people who think this disqualifies her. Hell, I could hardly breath from the pain but in 10 days did a little chipping and putting on the golf course and by the 3rd hole said "fuck this", took out the driver, hit one down the fairway and never looked back. It hasn't hindered me one bit and it won't hinder her.

4. Thanks for your post Starpass . . .
And I wish you decades of good health.

My mother had a masectomy 23 years ago.

I wish more women would be open about their operations and experiences, as you have been.

All the best
