Guerrillas Attack U.S., Iraqi Forces North of Baghdad
BAQUBA, Iraq (Reuters) - Guerrillas attacked a U.S.-Iraqi base, a police station and a National Guard post in the town of Khalis north of Baghdad on Saturday but were driven back by U.S. and Iraqi forces, witnesses and the U.S. army said.

In a statement, the American 1st Infantry Division said the insurgents attacked before dawn with AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades. Local police said three people were wounded among the Iraqi police and National Guard.

The deputy governor of Diyala province said two of his bodyguards were killed and three wounded when they went to Khalis to investigate what was happening and were shot by U.S.-led forces.

He said the men may have been mistaken for insurgents.

3. remember Trent Lott(o' Shit) in 2003?
http://www.hillnews.com/news/102903/gopunity.aspx

October 29, 2003

http://www.hillnews.com/news/102903/gopunity.aspx

excerpt:

Lott suggested moving more troops from the relatively stable south closer to the region around Tikrit, where attacks on U.S. forces have been common. He said there was a need for more trained military police, adding that his comments were not a criticism.

“Honestly, it’s a little tougher than I thought it was going to be,” Lott said. In a sign of frustration, he offered an unorthodox military solution: “If we have to, we just mow the whole place down, see what happens. You’re dealing with insane suicide bombers who are killing our people, and we need to be very aggressive in taking them out.”

2. AP -Militants, Forces Clash Near Baghdad
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 08:05 AM by maddezmom

Unknown gunmen attacked at dawn two police stations and the city hall. They occupied the city hall for a while," said Saad Ahmed Abbas, a municipal official in Al Khalis, 40 miles from Baghdad.

Abbas said that U.S. soldiers and Iraqi security forces — including the police and national guard — regained control after a two-hour exchange of fire with the rebels.

"Now the situation is calm," he said.

A police officer said that about 100 rebels took part in the attack, and that they had left behind several mortars and rocket propelled grenades.

Ghassan al-Khadran, deputy of governor of Diala province, said one policeman was injured in the shootout and that several rebels had been killed.

<snip>

The raids were part of “Operation Plymouth Rock,” launched on Tuesday against insurgents operating between the capital and Shiite shrine cities of Karbala and Najaf. Multinational commanders hope to close off escape routes for insurgents trying to escape from Fallujah.

6. "Guerillas"?
It'll be interesting to see if this is a general switch from "insurgents" or just a one-time slipup by somebody.

7. NYT used "Resistance" when talkin' about truce terms
You know, that's what victorious invaders always do,
once the Resistance has been destroyed
we declare that we want to have peace talks.

IRR 112604
Mafkarat al-Islam reports that the Resistance has managed
to cut all US supply lines on all land routes to the US
attackers around al-Fallujah. After that the US was faced with
a well-planned war of attrition, forcing the Americans into
a long-term close confrontation with the Resistance,
exposing them to great danger, as occurred in the first siege
of the city in April. For nearly one week, no major fighting
has broken out except under cover of darkness,
usually dissipating after sunrise. Even US aerial attacks on
the city have grown less intense than they were at the start of
the American offensive.

Another development has been the withdrawal of US
snipers from the streets overlooking the Euphrates
River, whereby the city became exposed from the
west.

Jane Arraf said she would we going back to Fallujah
in a couple of days. That should be interesting.
