Schools Win Battle Over Campus Recruiting
PHILADELPHIA - A federal appeals court Monday barred the Defense Department from withholding funds from colleges and universities that deny access to military recruiters.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (news - web sites) ruled 2-1 that a federal law known as the Solomon Amendment infringes on the free speech rights of schools that have restricted on-campus recruiting because of the military's ban on homosexuals.

Ruling in a lawsuit brought by students and professors at New Jersey law schools, the three-judge panel said that by threatening to withdraw federal funds from schools, the government is compelling them to take part in speech they do not agree with.

"The Solomon Amendment requires law schools to express a message that is incompatible with their educational objectives, and no compelling governmental interest has been shown to deny this freedom," the court wrote.

5. Yes if you fight
and also read up on opting out

It will at least get your child off their recruitment list thanks to No child left behind

To Opt Out
For parents or 18-year-old students who would like to have their names removed from military recruiting lists, download the opt out form from www.fcps.edu. Though forms were sent home with students in August.

Though most kids never got a opt out letter.

8. My understanding is that that's for mailings
My understanding is that the "opt out" letter is for mailings and calls to a child's (and if a person is 18 or under, living at home, that person's a child as far as I'm concerned). I'd like to see the military recruiters taken out of the public schools entirely if a local school board decides to do that. Like it did in Portland, Oregon.

Republicans are for smaller government and more local control, my sweet Aunt Fanny!

16. I noticed you linked to Fairfax County's site
Is that where you're located? I lived in Fairfax until I decided to live in sin and moved to the District. I still work in Annandale.

Welcome to DU!

7. Law schools have been fighting this rule for some time
Many of the major law schools have been very negative on the military recruiting on campus because of the military's position on homosexuals. This is a great ruling. I hope that it is not over turned.

11. I wish we could do this
for every military recruiter on a highschool campus.. these guys show up with a few flyers of their own.

http://www.objector.org/conferencecr03.html

Perhaps we can get kids themselves to hand out pamplets across their schools when recruiters are standing their with glossy "vacation" brochures.

Most importantly is educating your child on what (lies and sales pitches) the recruiters use.

17. My favorite high school kid recruiter story:
a former coworker's son, high school senior, was getting tons of phone calls from military recruiters. They told him they'd send him a pair of socks with information on his military options. He said 'fine, send me the socks'. So he gets these socks that said 'ARMY' around the top of the calf. He cut them off at the ankle and sent the top parts back with a letter telling them to leave him alone. That's one smart kid!:P

10. In Seattle, cable TV has 100s to 1000s of military recruiting commercials
From channel 2 to 85 constant. Not one mentions anything about killing or being killed. This is IMMORAL! If cigarette ADs have to put that it can kill you then the military should also. Dirty immoral Christian Republican leadership in America!

I was down stairs doing dishes thinking the same thing to myself.

we don't allow cigaretter ads to focus on our kids, but we allow military to stand inside their schools, dotted line.with a potential death warrant?

14. You should see the cigarette posters in most Seattle stores. In the window
facing the street and child eye level. The characters in these posters are action hero type. I swear! I promissed last week I'd take some pics but got too busy with Thanksgiving. I'll try to take some tomorrow.

19. Army and Navy ads are the worst
Those ads reduce war and killing to nothing more than a game. It's bad enough that some kids have reduced all violence to this level.

I saw an Army commercial that offered a free video game, and gave the Web address. Out of curiosity, I tried it, but could not get to the game unless I gave them all sorts of personal information.

As a parent, I feel I should have the right to freely access these sites if I so choose, anonymously, at that. If I had filled out that form, I'd probably be enlisted right now. How many kids -- thinking that all they want is this cool game -- go ahead and fill out this form, not thinking about what the possible ramifications are?

I have a kid who is a year away from high school. The first time she comes home with anything about the military, that's it. If kids are interested in it, they know where to go to sign up. They don't need it being brought to them in between classes, or in the lunchroom, or wherever the hell these recruiters set up shop.

18. Repukes cannot discriminate at my university...
Although I don't think they are banned if they do... just put on probation until the problem is remedied. I got the College Republicans put on probation when I filed a complaint because they charged me more for a cookie at a bake sale because I am white. :D

While they don't have a specific policy against gay people, their politics themselves drive most away.
