US uses banned weapon ..but was Tony Blair told?

By Paul Gilfeather Political Editor

US troops are secretly using outlawed napalm gas to wipe out remaining insurgents in and around Fallujah.

News that President George W. Bush has sanctioned the use of napalm, a deadly cocktail of polystyrene and jet fuel banned by the United Nations in 1980, will stun governments around the world.

And last night Tony Blair was dragged into the row as furious Labour MPs demanded he face the Commons over it. Reports claim that innocent civilians have died in napalm attacks, which turn victims into human fireballs as the gel bonds flames to flesh.

Outraged critics have also demanded that Mr Blair threatens to withdraw British troops from Iraq unless the US abandons one of the world's most reviled weapons. Halifax Labour MP Alice Mahon said: "I am calling on Mr Blair to make an emergency statement to the Commons to explain why this is happening. It begs the question: 'Did we know about this hideous weapon's use in Iraq?'"

Since the American assault on Fallujah there have been reports of "melted" corpses, which appeared to have napalm injuries.

Last August the US was forced to admit using the gas in Iraq.

A 1980 UN convention banned the use of napalm against civilians - after pictures of a naked girl victim fleeing in Vietnam shocked the world.

America, which didn't ratify the treaty, is the only country in the world still using the weapon.

15. probably white phosphorus...Newsweek article
~snip~

Phantom Fury was designed to warn off all antagonists, inside or outside Iraq. After nearly seven months of insurgent rule, Fallujah had become a symbol of anti-U.S. resistance. Jihadi Web sites praised the success of the city's holy warriors, and young men from all over the Muslim world flocked to join them. The operation began on Monday night with an aerial bombardment unmatched since the "Shock and Awe" campaign of March 2003. Artillery, mortars and 1,000-pound bombs rained down on northern Fallujah, shaking the earth and kicking up huge balls of fire and bursts of yellow and green sparks. AC-130 gunships flew low and spewed bullets by the thousands. At intervals, white phosphorus rounds would illuminate entire sections of the city, showering down balls of orange flame and leaving behind smoky jellyfish-shaped silhouettes. During the lulls, the wailing prayer calls of the muezzin could be heard echoing out of the city. Members of Kilo Company's second platoon, Spartan-two, watched the pyrotechnics from an attack position north of the city. They broke into admiring whistles after each concussive blast. "This was the real show," said Sgt. Joseph Gary, who fought in the spring 2003 drive to Baghdad. "Nothing came close to this."

When will I finally wake up from this nightmare?

WHEN does this end?

And aside from our country finally paying for all this, someday, I'd be satisfied if the schmucks in the White House and all their little friends and enablers and apologists and co-conspirators in the wrong wing would be forced to pay for this. I'd rather those of us more reasonable, more sentient Americans would not have to pay for it. WE certainly didn't authorize ANY of it, and most of us have also worked our buns off trying to stop it. Let it be on THEIR heads.

People have to be made aware of the reality of the war, not the 'glorified' version that the media and this adminstration is feeding them!!!!
They need to see all the blood and the gore and shredded limbs of our soldiers and the Iraqi children!!!

That is exactly what it took. And that is exactly what we don't have. We have taken the human, and disconnected it from the corporation. Like Bhopal. Sanitized. We need to connect that disconnection.

Here's an idea:
I was wondering if it's even legal to do this. Take a flier, and put it in every bill. So that people opening the bill will see this. And others where they work would see it. And it might even get passed around the company.

24. Story of the girl in the photo - she's running from the attack
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 08:45 PM by RamboLiberal
Pahn Thi Kim Phuc was born and raised in the village of Trang Bang, 30 minutes north of Saigon. During the Vietnam War, the strategic route 1 that runs through the village became the main supply road from Saigon to Phnom Penh. On June 8, 1972 together with American coordinators, the South Vietnamese Air Force dropped napalm bombs on Phuc's village. Nine year-old Phuc fled from a Buddhist pagoda, where she and her family were hiding. Two of her infant cousins did not survive the attack, and Phuc was badly burned.

Phuc was photographed running down the road, screaming from the third degree burns to her skin. Nick Ut, the Associated Press photographer who was there to cover the siege, took the photograph of the young Phuc. Moved by her pain, he rushed her to a South Vietnamese hospital. She then spent 14 months recovering in Barsky Hospital, the American hospital in Saigon, where her care was paid for by a private foundation. Ut's photograph of her remains one of the most unforgettable images of the Vietnam War.

She was not expected to live. The third degree burns covering half her body would require many operations and years of therapy. After two years, however, with the help of doctors who were committed to her care, she was able to return to her village and her family began to rebuild their lives.

In 1982, 10 years after the famous photograph, a German photographer located Phuc. In the interim, the Government had subjected her to endless interviews; communist officials had summoned her to Ho Chi Minh City to be used in propaganda films. Phuc had been forced to quit school and move back to her province, where she was supervised daily as a "national symbol of war." That was a low point in her life. She spent time reading and finding purpose for her life. In Christmas 1982, she became a Christian.

http://www.lordly.com/talent/lordly/PhucKim.html

At 2pm the South Vietnamese dropped white phosphorous marker bombs. As she ran with the other children, four drums of napalm dropped on the road. Two of her infant brothers were killed instantly.

"I saw the bombs. I saw the fire. There was a terrible heat," Kim remembers. "I tore off my burning clothes. But the burning didn't stop. People poured water over me from their canteens. Then I fainted."

The AP photographer who captured those horrific moments was Nick Ut. He drove her to a hospital. He would never forget that one little girl. He continued to visit her in the hospital, bring her books and gifts and eventually set up a fund for donations to her family.

The photograph he snapped of her agony was instantly transmitted around the world. It would win him a Pulitzer and change both their lives. Kim would spend the next 14 months in the hospital. She was covered with third-degree burns over half her body and was not expected to live. Her pain was almost unbearable. Her surgeon Dr. Mark Gorney of San Francisco volunteered at the Barksy children's plastic surgery hospital in Saigon. When he first saw her, Kim's chin was welded to her chest by scar tissue and her left arm was burnt almost to the bone.

"Napalm. The Horror-weapon from the Vietnam-war . It is internationally banned and outlawed , it's use is forbidden by the Geneva-Conventions . But nevertheless , it was used in the Iraq-war by the US army .

Article is dated July 8, 2003. It's a translation of a German TV program.

They direct quotes from military members talking about Napalm and a firebomb called MK 77

That is the one to feel. Of course, you likely feel all three if you are human.

I am not saying the personal "you", I am saying the universal "you" as in "us".

It is hard for me to believe that my little displays (the one in Fremont is still up!) and my posters tacked up everywhere are making a bit of difference but I do it anyway for it is the only way to save my soul.

27. The Cutting Edge is also the Bleeding Edge
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 09:12 PM by jmcgowanjm
And, who knows, there may be more horrible revelations on
the way. Abuses in prisons were being commonly talked
about by Iraqis when I was in Baghdad last month. Why did I
not write about them? There was no confirmation. Another
story doing the rounds sounds almost apocryphal.
Remember, how US tanks simply glided into Firdaus Square
in April 2003? A few days earlier, the colourful minister
for information, Mohammad Sahhaf, had threatened “a
unique way” in which US troops around Baghdad airport
would be “handled”. Two floors of the passenger areas
were under American control. But Iraqis were still in
occupation of VIP and service buildings. This is where
the control valves were for water supply to the main
passenger area, where the Americans were. At night, petrol
was pumped into the first floor. The ground floor of
the passenger terminal was flooded with water. An 11 KV
current passed through the water. The first floor was then set
on fire causing the US soldiers to rush downstairs — to
be electrocuted. Heaven knows how many were
killed.

To flush out the Iraqis from the remaining airport buildings,
a neutron bomb was allegedly used. This enhanced
radiation bomb spares buildings but reduces humans to
ash. Iraqi Republican guards, witness to this macabre
display, informed the Baathist military leadership about
the lengths to which the US could go. This resulted in
the collapse of all resistance, facilitating the entry of UStanks
into central Baghdad. This is a one-sided story sourced
to Baathist soldiers and local villagers. The US should
either confirm or deny it. Was this the reason why
Baghdad airport remained closed until nine months after the
fall of Saddam Hussein’s statue on April 9,
2003?

A very respected cleric in Najaf told me: “The horrible stories
in our prisons, the mystery at Baghdad airport — all these
will surface in some distant future.” Well, Baathist army
leaders and troops have been pressed into service in
Fallujah. The story of prisoner abuse appears to be only the tip
of the iceberg. What Americans thought were tightly kept
secrets are part of common “gossip” in Baghdad. These
will now reach Americans as truth resurrected by
American journalists determined to restore credibility to
their profession. The mist on Iraq and Afghanistan has begun
to lift from the eyes of the American public, indeed the
world.

103. Duh.
"This enhanced radiation bomb spares buildings but reduces humans to
ash."

Neat trick. But neutron radiation just causes death by radiation sickness; the point was that it had a low yield, so buildings would survive, but high radiation output, so people (and rats, but not cockroaches) would die. Some quick. Some painless. But s/he speaks with authority.

31. Britain-what US can look forward to
Edited on Tue Nov-30-04 09:21 PM by jmcgowanjm
'why any trauma at all?' What, after all, was Britain's posture
at the time of the Armistice in November 1918? How did the
war leave her? The answer could be summed up as
follows:

* she possessed incomparably the most powerful Navy in
the world, and her most serious naval rival had been
eliminated;

* she possessed the largest Merchant Marine in the
world;

* she possessed the largest Air Force in the
world;

* she had an Army of over 3 1/2 million men, including the
most effective contingent of the victorious Allied forces on
the main front;

* her industries - some of which had been decidedly
backward or flagging in 1914 - had received great
stimulus;

* important new industries had been created (for
example, chemicals, dyestuffs, optical glass and
instruments, non-ferrous metal refineries, aircraft
and aero-engines);

* there was full employment - indeed, a labour shortage;
and

* over one million square miles were in process of being
added to Britain's overseas possessions and
dependencies.

It could well be asked; 'what was there to have a trauma
about?' The short answer to that question has to be,
quite unsurprisingly, delusion. By this I mean: delusion
before the event; delusion during the event; and delusion
after the event. It was comprehensive.

I probably dropped some 866 napalm bombs on North Korea between Sept. 1951-July 1953, Man, I loved releasing those fire bombs on anybody, as it has no mercy on anything. Not a rat, mouse, ant, worm, or bird will survive a napalm blast. What the flames wont do, the lack of oxygen will get you... I think we should have done this long ago in Irag.

I know why The Neo-cons are doing this.
They really do think they are saving America.
But they don't understand that subverting the process IS the death of America itself.
They just think they know better than the majority - and while they may be right, that does not give them the right of suppression.

That is NOT Republican.

Actually, they called me "ignorant", but when I came back with other "legitimate" sources that spoke of the napalm used on Iraq back in 2003, they backed off. Seriously, as much as I hate rags like the Enquirer, sometimes they DO break legitimate stories before anyone else. I told Mr. "Don't be ignorant" that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Personally, I'm just as concerned, if not more, about the depleted uranium. Our soldiers are being contaminated with that as well as the Iraquis.

Officials confirm dropping firebombs on Iraqi troops

Results are 'remarkably similar' to using napalm

By James W. Crawley
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

American jets killed Iraqi troops with firebombs – similar to the controversial napalm used in the Vietnam War – in March and April as Marines battled toward Baghdad.

Marine Corps fighter pilots and commanders who have returned from the war zone have confirmed dropping dozens of incendiary bombs near bridges over the Saddam Canal and the Tigris River. The explosions created massive fireballs.

"We napalmed both those (bridge) approaches," said Col. Randolph Alles in a recent interview. He commanded Marine Air Group 11, based at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, during the war. "Unfortunately, there were people there because you could see them in the (cockpit) video.

"They were Iraqi soldiers there. It's no great way to die," he added. How many Iraqis died, the military couldn't say. No accurate count has been made of Iraqi war casualties.

99. thanks for posting that. I was looking for that earlier
It's amazing how short people's memories are.

They fucking admitted it, and now everybody's acting all surprised.

These gangsters have no concept of right and wrong. Moral and immoral.

118. Yes, thank you for posting that link. What a goddamned shame.
I'd like to find out what other companies besides Dow Chemicals manufacture napalm. There's no excuse for this increased ability to bring suffering and grief.

From the article:
"I used it routinely in Vietnam," said retired Marine Lt. Gen. Bernard Trainor, now a prominent defense analyst. "I have no moral compunction against using it. It's just another weapon."

Trainor

And, the distinctive fireball and smell have a psychological impact on troops, experts said.

"The generals love napalm," said Alles, who has transferred to Washington. "It has a big psychological effect."

Alles or Einstein? Hard to tell.

Anger in Sunni-dominated Baghdad has reached a fever pitch, as an Iraqi physician told a radio station he has examined bodies of people who seem to have died of banned chemical weapons: the bodies are swollen, are yellowish and have no smell. Asia Times Online sources in Baghdad say that people in Fallujah believe the Americans may have used chemical weapons in the bombing of Jolan, ash-Shuhada and al-Jubayl neighborhoods. They also say the neighborhoods were showered with cluster bombs.

95. The most egregious arrogance never believed itself,...
,...susceptible to the "rule of law",...ANY "rule of law".

The neocons have seriously failed to anticipate the 21st Century,...while executing their will about the 21st century.

As difficult as it is to withdraw from the compassion associated with the WILLFULL pain inflicted by these assholes,...try to sit back and watch the human spirit humiliate, over and over and over again their falsely invested self-righteousness.

However, memories of their egregious spending of "political" and human and moral and spiritual capital,...will be FRESH,...'cause,...humanity is CONNECTED,...and we are tired of this abuse.

96. This isn't all we've done
We've also used cluster bombs and depleted uranium shells on the Iraqis. I've seen the footage of both lying around on the ground in populated areas. An Iraqi mother told about how her son was killed by a cluster bomb, and in the case of the shells a geiger counter confirmed what they were.

Free Speech TV, people. Watch it.

97. Dogs feeding on corps's in Falluja? Women and children charred

I can't post yet but dogs eating bodies and women and childrencharred beyond recognition should get the media's attention shouldn't it.

Comments: Fallujans, the price of liberation

Residents of a village neighbouring Falluja have told Aljazeera that they helped bury the bodies of 73 women and children who were burnt to death by a US bombing attack.

"We buried them here, but we could not identify them because they were charred by the use of napalm bombs used by the Americans," said one resident of Saqlawiya in footage aired on Aljazeera on Sunday.

There have been no reports of the US military using napalm in Falluja and no independent verification of the claims.

The resident told Aljazeera all the bodies were buried in a single grave.

Late last week, US troops in Falluja called on some residents who had fled the fighting to return and help bury the dead.

However, according to other residents who managed to flee the fighting after US forces entered the city, hundreds more bodies still lay in the streets and were being fed on by packs of wild dogs.

Danger zone

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Falluja remained too dangerous to secure proper retrieval and burial of corpses.

The ICRC and other relief groups
are unable to enter the city

"We could not enter Falluja city so far due to the security measures and the continuing battles," Muain Qasis, ICRC spokesman in Jordan, told Aljazeera.

When asked about the security measures, Qasis said: "In order to carry out an independent and acceptable humanitarian action, we must have guarantees ensuring the safety of the humanitarian staff.

"The humanitarian situation in Falluja city is very difficult.

"The city is still suffering shortage of public services. There is no water or electricity. There is no way to offer medical treatment for the injured families still surrounded inside the city," he added.

Detained civilians released

In related news, the US military in Falluja announced that it had released 400 of the 1450 men it had detained in the war-ravaged city.

"More than 400 detainees have since been released after being deemed non-combatants," the military said, adding that 100 more were due to be released on Sunday.

117. I am more concerned about Depleted Uranium.
There is no excuse for using napalm. I am more concerned about Depleted Uranium. Ever tank round has 10 lbs or radioactive depleted uranium. This sounds like a dirty bomb to me. Doesn’t this make us terrorists?

George Washington always gave quarter to enemy soldiers even when they refused to do the same. He did this because he believed that who we were was determined by our actions.

The CBC has some interesting thing s to say about Depleted Uranium weapons.

135. On one hand, you'd like to wish our vicious chickenhawks could see this
as in get a really HARD LOOK, but on the other hand, you feel such outrage at the very thought of their being able to ogle the utter helplessness and suffering they have caused the tiniest among us as filthy.

You almost want to keep their perverted eyes away from feasting on their handiwork.

What an unholy world to contain such horrors.
