The Council on Water Quality is supported by a subset of the member companies of the Perchlorate Study Group, including Lockheed Martin, Aerojet, Kerr-McGee Chemical and American Pacific Corporation. In the past decade, the Perchlorate Study Group has worked cooperatively with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to increase scientific and medical understanding of perchlorate’s risk to human health.

Our Mission
Grounded in sound science and education, the Council on Water Quality is dedicated to improving the public dialogue on the facts about perchlorate in drinking and irrigation waters, as well as food, and the potential impacts of perchlorate regulation on human health, water supply, water rates and taxpayers.

To provide public agencies, business, the media and the public with a greater understanding these of issues, the Council on Water Quality will assist in explaining scientific information related to the effects of perchlorate in water; state and federal policies, programs and regulatory issues; and treatment technologies.

"The state of California, meanwhile, set a standard of no more than 10 ppb of perchlorate in drinking water. That was lowered to 6 ppb in drinking water to account for the chemical also lacing food, Mayer said."

13. Yeah, a stalling tactic. It's kind of like what they did with
global warming. You can put off doing anything about it by having "studies" or expressing doubt about the effects.

But Environmental Protection Agency official Kevin Mayer called for calm, saying in an interview Tuesday: "Alarm is not warranted. That is clear."

"I think that it is important that EPA and FDA and other agencies come to some resolution about the toxicity of this chemical," Mayer said. "That has been, frankly, a struggle for the last few years."

-------

Asked whether that level of chemical in milk was worrisome, Mayer, the EPA's regional perchlorate coordinator for Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada, said, "The answer is, we don't know yet."

The FDA said in a statement that consumers should not change their eating habits in response to the test results, posted on the agency's Web site Friday.

Yep, maybe a ten year study will find out if we should limit the exposure of this chemical.

22. And how much of the stuff is found
in non-organic? Probably as much or more. It may mean that the air, soil and water are filled with the stuff, especially around 'defense' areas, e.g., test sites, firing ranges, propellent manufacturing plants, etc.

23. rocket fuel found in organic produce
Madness! I know Florida has Nasa, but do they manufacture rockets in the state of Maryland? Is there something rocket-related near El Centro CA? How about Texas, has perchlorate been found in water there? Texas is what Bush made it, the canary in the mine, the bellweather for the rest of the nation?

Rocket Fuel Residues Found in Lettuce

BUSH ADMINISTRATION ISSUES GAG ORDER ON EPA DISCUSSIONS OF POSSIBLE
ROCKET-FUEL TAINTED LETTUCE

PETER WALDMAN, THE WALL STREET JOURNAL:

The Bush administration has imposed a gag order on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from publicly discussing perchlorate pollution, even as two new studies reveal high levels of the rocket-fuel component may be contaminating the nation's lettuce supply.

33. Organic baby greens on my shopping list today
Going to Costco and it's what I always get. Now I'll get romaine.

My own little contribution to this thread is that I used to work for a Mexican grower in San Diego and this company would export chemicals (insecticides) down there that were NOT safe. They had to be smuggled across the border -- and were. So...next time you go to the store and buy tomatoes, or anything from Baja...think twice. Of course, the problem with this is that stuff isn't identified as being from Mexico. I swear it's not safe to eat or drink anything anymore.

27. Bush* also tried to exempt Pentagon from clean-up that may cost BILLIONS

Bush Administration Again Seeks Exemptions for Cleanup of Toxic Rocket Fuel

WASHINGTON, April 20 — The Bush Administration is once again trying to exempt the Pentagon from cleaning up military sites contaminated with rocket fuel, despite a complete lack of evidence that the nation's military readiness has ever been hampered by compliance with toxic waste laws.

Contamination of drinking water, groundwater or soil by perchlorate, the main component of solid rocket fuel, has been confirmed by testing at least 34 Department of Defense (DOD) facilities in 15 states, according to Environmental Working Group's analysis of federal and state data. EWG has also identified 63 military sites in 32 states where perchlorate contamination is likely, but where testing has not been conducted.

30. Project Censored had this story in "top 25 censored stories of 1998"......
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 08:41 AM by ElsewheresDaughter
this is old news and it was not about"organic" foods it was about all all lettuce, produce and drinking water.

http://www.projectcensored.org/publications/2000/
http://www.projectcensored.org/publications/2001/
http://www.projectcensored.org/publications/2004/

Big flashing lights should be set off whenever Bush issues a gag order, but the gag order on the EPA regarding lettuce fell unnoticed under most people's radars earlier this year. Often important overlooked news items get a second glance when media watchdog organizations like Project Censored publish their most censored stories of the year. I felt like this one was going make the list for sure, but it fell through the cracks.

I recommend the website of the Environmental Working Group and google searches for the words "perchlorate" and "gag order" for more information. Also helpful is Dr. Helen Caldicott's book The New Nuclear Danger: George Bush's Military-Industrial Complex. And remember, it might take a rocket scientist to create this problem, but it doesn't take one to develop a conspiracy theory solution.

PROBLEM #1

Given: The Colorado River and over 500 drinking water sources in 20 states are contaminated with perchlorate.

Given: Perchlorate is a rocket and missile fuel component.

Given: Much of the national lettuce crop is grown in Southern California and Arizona with water contaminated with perchlorate.

Given: Perchlorate affects the thyroid gland's ability to produce essential hormones and can cause fatal anemia in adults.

Given: Thyroid hormone level disruption causes lowered IQ, mental retardation, loss of hearing and speech, and motor skill deficits.

Given: Pregnant women exposed to perchlorate put their fetus at risk of thyroid hormone level disruption.

Given: Pregnant women drink water.

Given: George W. Bush issued a gag order on the Environmental Protection Agency in April 2003 from publicly discussing its findings on perchlorate content in the nation's winter lettuce crop.

Given: Independent studies have found high levels of perchlorate in the nation's lettuce supply.

Given: Pregnant women sometimes eat salads.

Given: The Pentagon and defense contractors face potentially billions of dollars in cleanup liability for perchlorate pollution.

Given: You can't raise taxes while you are trying to be re-elected (or re-assigned).

Given: The Pentagon and defense contractors argue that perchlorate is safe at levels 200 times higher than what the EPA says is safe.

Given: A cruise missile costs one million dollars.

Given: The Department of Defense refused to fund approximately $215,000 needed to collect vegetable samples.

Given: George W. Bush wants to develop "mini-nukes."

Given: 32 former executives, consultants or major shareholders of weapons manufacturers have been appointed to important positions in the Bush Administration.

Given: 8 of them have ties to Lockheed Martin.

Given: Most Americans have never heard of the word "perchlorate."

Given: Most Americans do not know that they are poisoning themselves with a byproduct of Cold War era weapons development.

Problem: Why the gag order?
