Chair up in the air
(Variety) — NEW YORK -- CBS is considering multiple newscasters to replace Dan Rather in the anchor's chair when he steps down in March.

Viacom co-prexy-co-chief operating officer Leslie Moonves said an anchor partnership is being considered as part of a broad rethinking of the "CBS Evening News" franchise, and that no candidates have been ruled out.

"We are exploring every possibility right now," Moonves said. "After the first of the year, we are going to come to a decision and, by the way, it could be more than one person."

They are worthless as a new source anyway, and they stink as entertainment.

3. They should pick a female
Give it to Helen Thomas!! She deserves a job where she doesn't have to run her ass off, and her CHAIR is RESERVED (unlike the WH press room). That would piss off the right, but they hate CBS anyway, so who cares? She could do some charming "thoughts for the day" at the end--kinda like a Granma Andy Rooney with claws. They'd never do it, but hey, I can dream!

The national evening news isn't for junkies...it's for people who think they are well-informed if they watch it, and only it, and don't read papers or get on the net and surf around. In reality, it's the 'synopsis' of the day, through a curious, not-too-controversial, dinner-hour mentality lens. OTOH, the cable newsers waste a huge opportunity, airing the same shit over and over again in three cycles, only changing it when breaking news occurs.

Rumor is Diane Sawyer is in the mix. That should make the GOP happy, as she served in the Nixon WH.
