11/30 Romania Opposition Demands Election Rerun, Alleges Fraud
BUCHAREST, Romania (Reuters) - Romania's centrist opposition Tuesday demanded a rerun of Sunday's general elections, alleging fraud in the electronic vote counting had helped the ruling ex-communists, who held a slim lead.

The opposition protest over the elections for a new president and parliament threatened to plunge the Balkan country into weeks of uncertainty as it struggles to stay on track to join the European Union in 2007.

"It's necessary to repeat the elections," Traian Basescu, leader of the centrist Liberal and Democrat party alliance, told a news conference. "We are concerned the electoral process is much too affected by fraud."

Basescu said his party had discovered that electronic vote counting fraud had affected more than 160,000 votes and demanded that the central electoral bureau resign. "We want the law to do its job, that is our only recourse," he said.

1. my my my
Basescu said that vote counting Monday evening showed that the number of invalid votes had decreased since the first count in the morning instead of increasing.

"This was the moment of major fraud," he said. "This is when from the invalid votes, around 160,000 were transferred to Adrian Nastase for the presidency, that is 2.5 percent."

"On the vote for parliament, around 100,000 (invalid) votes were transferred to the PSD," he added.

How I wish our Democratic Party had the guts to demand examinations of these evil e-voting machines.

3. I am wondering if, having watched what happened in the US,...
the citizens of Ukraine and Romania are fighting back because they know if it can happen in the US it can happen anywhere. They also know what it is like to live under tyranny and will NOT go back.

After all, we didn't do anything special after our election, did we?
More likely reverse is true, we are watching Ukraine and now Romania and realize how complacent we really are compared to them.

irregularities in the US election and the use of e-voting in the US. They would get news from outside the US which covered the 'glitches' more than the US media. It certainly has made me sit up and take notice here in Canada and we still use paper ballots.

Edited to add: Given that there are US entities both in Ukraine and possibly in Romania to help the protests there, it is ironic to be sure that they are not doing the same in the US.

8. My question: Which party is the most anti-Bush party?
That's who I want to win, though I would be fine with Nadia Commanecci as president.
