WP: Continued (consumer) Confidence Slide Jolts Markets
Continued Confidence Slide Jolts Markets
By Jerry Knight
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, November 30, 2004

Stocks slipped for the second day in a row as consumer confidence continued to deteriorate and the forecasts for Christmas sales were slashed by a leading retail industry organization.

Consumer confidence disappointed economists who were expecting an upturn as it fell for the fourth consecutive month, based on surveys taken by The Conference Board, a private industry group.

The pollsters found consumers intend to spend more money this holiday season than they did last year but they remain worried about future economic conditions....

***

While Friday-after-Thanksgiving sales were exceptionally strong, the ring of cash registers faded as the weekend wore on, boosting worries about Christmas sales and the health of the economy....

21. No Blame Intended, Hyper consumerism crap was the target
of my little rant.

I feel I can trust pagans, but not those two faced bible thumpers.

Cold Blooded Murder is a Cristian value apparently.

PS How you doing LeftCoast?

Don't you wish we had politicians like in the Ukraine. How strange to see it working over there. And how sad our system has become.

If Kerry would have said Hit the Streets I would still be there, what a f-ing let down.

It was my belief early on that the Soviet Union dissolving was one of the worst things that could happen to the USA. And I feel that way even more today.

10. I have stupid nephews and nieces in the same boat!
Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 07:54 AM by The Zanti Regent
Yet, they are brainwashed by TV Preachers and the ASSemblies of Gawd or Southern Fried Baptists.

They have exhausted their unemployment and some have also reached their 5 year lifetime TANF limit. They are still unemployed and beg for food and clothing for the kids, they moved back in with their parents.

Their answer when I try to talk to them?

"JESUS IS TESTING ME"

...and they go deeper into Bible study.

The worse off they get, the more they are convinced that the Rapture is coming. They STILL vote for the Nazi Party no matter what I try and do to persuade them.

Meanwhile my only son lies in the VA cemetary thanks to Bush.

I've given up on this country. Secession is the only way out.

12. My prayers are with your son.
I can't say I understand your position because I've never had a son to lose. I see and hear about people that have lost their family members in Iraq and anguish and sense of loss is very profound.

But I think that your testimonies are powerful; what you've written has moved me. And I am going to share it with others.

I hope you don't give up on this country because its people like you that can help change it.

People like your niece and nephew pretend that they don't see the death and destruction that Bush's policies are causing but deep down they know something's wrong with obsenities like Abu Ghraib, shock and awe mass murder etc.

I'm not a fundamentalist and I don't require that others accept my religious or political beliefs. But I do know that Jesus Christ is about giving life NOT taking life.

One last thing that I know will be very hard to say: but somewhere in life you will need to forgive and move on. It will free you.
That doesn't mean the Bush shouldn't be charged with war crimes.

Of course you are free to dimiss every word I've written.

17. Barkley, your compassion is admirable, but change won't happen.

After four years of lies I had hoped the population would turn the bastards out, but now I've lost all hope of a democratic legal change.

It's now clear that the nazis control the WH, congress, the judiciary, the media. Hell, they even control the very machines we use for voting, so I see little hope while the current system remains extant.

As they have tightened their hold on the systems of gov't, the people have less and less input to gov't. This *will* reach a breaking point.

At some point the people of this country will wake up and demand change. If change is not forthcoming the nazis will find that an armed population is their worst nightmare.

I keep having this vision of some very bad times, followed by a 'new dawn' of america being what it should have been all along.

16. It is a medieval mindset
What happens in this life is unimportant--all emphasis on faith and the rewards in the hereafter. It took literally hundreds of years to break that perspective, encouraged by the medieval church, and pave the way to the Enlightenment with its emphasis on reason and belief that ordinary people (ordinary people believing themselves that they) were entitled to more than a subsistence existence.

2. No money here!
Fasted for Thanksgiving, (called it Thankslosing) and no money will be spent for the "holy days". It's going to be a blue X-mas for sure.

Even if I had the bucks, I would still starve the beast and people I know are serious about doing so. With the way the economy and dollar are going, it won't need much help.

He's made our entire world sick. He and his psychopathic supporters will have to step aside before we can begin to recover.

5. Celebrate What?
4 Years is a Very, Very, Very Long Time. There may be little to celebrate come 2008 with a Devalued Dollar, Higher Interest Rates, Unemployment, Inflation, More Foreign War Deaths, Roe Vs. Wade Overturned, Etc.

Lots of damage to be done between now and then. It may take another decade to recover.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

A lot of damage has already been done in the first four years. Doesn't bode well for the next four.

19. I hate these fucking articles
some bozo tries to pretend that the market going up or down can be traced to some actual economic reality. For example, this article which was based on Monday's and Tuesday's averages is completely refuted by today's trading - all indices are up. What as caused such a sea change? We'll have to read his article tomorrow, where he will shamelessly feign total amnesia of this article and claim to be able to explain the gains in equally broad strokes. One day the market is up and they are citing trends, reports, bullshit, bullshit, horseshit, etc. The next day it is down and they are citing trends, reports, bullshit, bullshit, horseshit, etc. The market is basically a giant casino where you are trying to outguess and outpsych somebody else. Are you "investing" if you hold some stock for 12 minutes waiting for a 1/16 point uptick so you can dump it or are you "speculating" that some other doofus will be psyched into thinking the stock is moving up and wants to get in on the action?
