Governor stays Texas woman's Wednesday execution |
|
HOUSTON, Dec. 1 — Texas Gov. Rick Perry granted a rare stay of execution to a Houston woman just hours before she was scheduled to die Wednesday night by lethal injection for the 1987 murder of her husband and two children. http://famulus.msnbc.com/famulusgen/reuters12-01-153356.asp?t=RENEW

Who knows.. they convict people down here so quick you have to wonder if they really investigated it. Thank God there is a test to determine what it was on her dress. That is the evidence they used to convict her and they have had it a while. So now they wait until she is hours from death to test it?
There is something horribly wrong with our system of justice that is so eager to kill and jail people here in America. We have more people in jail per capita than anyone I think(not solid on those figures but I think thats right).

The governor said he was granting additional time so courts can order further laboratory tests on evidence in the case. Newton's supporters charge she was the victim of poor work done by the Houston Police Department crime laboratory, which has been plagued by scandals in the past few years. Police said they found residue on the dress she was wearing when the murders were committed indicating she had fired a weapon, but Newton claims that residue was actually nitrate from fertilizer. Tests developed since Newton was convicted can differentiate between nitrates from gunpowder and fertilizer.
