Canadian hosts charmed by Bush
(comment: That's what the title of the article is -- but the contents suggest that not everyone in the selected crowd of Maritimers WAS won over.)

HALIFAX (CP) - Helen Murray was honoured to receive a warm, personal thank you from George W. Bush on Wednesday, but she said the U.S. president's charm failed to win her trust.

(snip)

""His thanks came a little too late," said Murray, a resident of Bedford, N.S., who took in a German family and a resident of New York after 44 diverted aircraft landed in Halifax three years ago.

"I think it's pretty obvious he had another reason for being here."

8. He went there to push his missile defence program.
I wonder how charming they will find him when they read/hear about this.

U.S. President Bush makes bold pitch for missile defence shield

By BRUCE CHEADLE

Bush deviated sharply from the formal agenda of his first official visit to Canada by baldly requesting Canadian participation in a continental missile defence program that successive Liberal governments have been ducking for years.

9. Thanks
"'We cannot defend our country and save our homes and families by waiting for the enemy to attack us,"' Bush said, quoting comments King made early in the Second World War.

"'To remain on the defensive is the surest way to bring the war to Canada.'

"Mackenzie King was correct then and we should always remember the wisdom of his words today," added Bush, who seemed to pause for applause that didn't come from the 350 assembled guests and dignitaries."

APPLAUSE that didn't come.:nopity:

5. Oh, no! Not the "charm offensive" again!
The media pulled this crap during Election2000. I vividly remember listening to Cokie Roberts talk about the "charm offensive" of Bush. She would say phrases like, "Oh, he's sooo charming...!"

Gag! I thought we were through with that...:puke:

14. I saw the Lizard King's speech on CSPAN
Most Canadians present looked uncomfortable, especially the P.M. There were a hell of a lot of SS bodyguards around him when he left the stage. What's he so worried about if he's amongst friends, as he just got done saying?

Maybe those who think he's "charming" are brain dead too.
How can a stupid idiot who can't even get through a sentence be considered "charming".

nearly any human alive is more "charming" that the dim son.

Hey, a short girl can dream, can't she?

If I had to choose one complimentary word for Bush, charming would not be it. Then again, I can't think of another one!

24. Nothing has indeed changed
"Television commentators, meanwhile, stressed tensions between the two countries as they presided over images of Canadian protesters and riot police in shoving matches. It was a different, boisterous Canada that Americans were seeing, a far cry from the polite, peacekeeping neighbour of old."
