U.N. given Ivory Coast safety assurances

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A senior U.N. official has been assured there will be no repetition of the incident that forced suspension last week of food relief flights in Ivory Coast.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's principal special deputy representative in the West African country, Alan Doss, Wednesday met with senior representatives of the rebel Forces Nouvelles in Bouake in the rebel-held north.

Doss reportedly stressed the need for full respect by all parties of a U.N. Security Council resolution establishing the U.N. Operation in Ivory Coast.

Rebel representatives assured Doss of free and unimpeded access for U.N. peacekeepers, military observers and United Nations and other humanitarian agencies' personnel, he said.
