US family sues 'Hamas-linked' charities

By Catherine Miller
BBC News, Chicago

This week, a piece of the Arab-Israeli conflict is being transferred from the dusty streets of the West Bank to the chilly winds and sleek skyscrapers of downtown Chicago.

The Boim family accuse Chicago charities of links with Hamas
The family of David Boim, an American teenager shot dead by Hamas at a West Bank bus stop in 1996, is suing a group of Chicago-based organisations who they say helped fund Hamas operations.

It will be the first courtroom test of a piece of federal anti-terror legislation passed in the early 1990s, which supporters say helps strike a blow at terror support networks.

But the case has also raised concerns for the Muslim community about where support for militants ends and guilt by association begins.

1. well I hope the greedy bastards lose
because next they'll be suing us for giving aid and comfort, etc. by having any kind of negative opinion of Israel's government policies.

Honestly, if you don't want your son killed, then don't send him off to a place where everybody hates you, for whatever reason, ESPECIALLY not an outpost in the West Bank.

3. I think you paint this with an awfully broad brush
Please wait while I don my asbestos suit

OK, now.

The article really doesn't address the reason why the son was there. Is it possible this person went to the West Bank as an individual or part of a delegation or group dedicated to advocating peaceful solutions to the conflict? Is it possible this person was in the West Bank on his way to or from Jordan? There are a myriad of reasons for someone to be there.

Please note I am not attacking your position as wrong, nor am I espousing my position as right. I am, however, pointing out that you arrived at an assumption where none could really be inferred from the article.

As for going after the charities, I agree with you regarding painting every muslim as a terrorist and every charity as a funding source. While I seldom believe the news to bee accurate on the face, I can only hope this family had some serious inside information regarding the charity or charities they went after. IF they were correct in doing so, and this charity had assets already frozen based on ACCURATE evidence from the Federal government, then I would say take them down.

5. I'm just very cynical. This is a litigious society
and I would like to believe that a family would only act on 100 percent certainty, but human nature tells me that even if the government "just says so" is probably good enough for them, and we know how well "just says so" is doing with the sheep herders being held as grand master terrorists in gitmo.

Yes I paint with a broad brush, but the chances are pretty low that a teenager was in the west bank on a mission of mercy. And another thing - about the parenting; this is a dangerous world.

There is no justification for murdering a child (or any innocent), but there is no justification for sending your children where the possibility of them getting murdered is so high.

I am just a cynic - don't worry, no flame from me.

7. Exactly why I always give EXTRA to Muslim charities
These good people are dogged at every turn.
We have an excellent organization in our area that
supply basics to Palestine. The ISM is also
very excellent.
