The Ohio Secretary of State certifies that Bush won
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 02:56 PM by Zep
100% of precints reporting
Bush -- 50.90% of statewide total

Complete county breakdowns at official site:
http://election.sos.state.oh.us/results/RaceDetail.aspx?race=PP

But there's something fishy. Apparently nobody voted
in Athens county. Any Ohioans can tell me what's there.

31. You might want to ask that of Warren County, as well
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 04:59 PM by AngryOldDem
That is the county (between Dayton and Cincinnati) that locked down its Board of Elections on Election Night because of a "terrorist threat." No one witnessed the counting of the votes there.

ON EDIT: Warren County is heavily Republican, so it may not ultinately make a difference, but that is beside the point when they close their building to outside observers with a bullshit reason. You always count votes in the open. Always.

13. Maybe my math is wrong
But if Bush* got 50.90%
Kerry got 48.63%
Badnarik got 0.26% and
Peroutka 0.21%

that only adds up to 99.7%

what happened to the last 0.3%?

I know its a small number but shouldn't the total of votes for president be 100%?

Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 03:20 PM by George_S
So math isn't my strong suit :)

Scrolling through the country results makes it seem Bush won every county by at least 2%, some he won at close to 75%. Then why is it so close?

So dumb question. If I add up all the precentages from each country and divide by 100, should that equal Bush's 50.90% total?

18. Methinks you misread the tabulation..
Bush did not win every county--if you scroll down, you'll see that Kerry's name is at the top of a lot of the counties.

Your math is also fuzzy. You'd need to multiply each percentage by the total votes cast in the county, then add them up and divide by the total number of votes cast in the state to get each candidate's %.

Simply adding the %'s up and dividing by 100 would yield a number far greater than 100.

20. no
Your method would weight each county equally, regardless of how many votes were actually cast there. Here's a simple example:

County A: Kerry gets 60,000 votes, Bush gets 40,000 votes. So Kerry has 60% and Bush has 40% there.

County B: Kerry gets 20,000 votes, Bush gets 30,000 votes. So Kerry has 40% and Bush has 60% in that county.

Averaging each percentage gives you (60+40)/2=50 for Kerry, and (40+60)/2=50 for Bush.

But adding up the vote totals, Kerry gets 80,000 of 150,000 votes cast, or 53%, while Bush gets 70,000 of 150,000, or 47%.

Adding percentages is usually a bad idea! (It's the equivalent of adding fractions without changing to a common denominator, if you rememeber that from back in the day.) Hope that helps.

12. That's interesting
I wanted to be sure that Athens County was an actual 0% vote in the total, instead of showing as no votes, but actually being counted. I added up all the counties. All the numbers listed add up to the total number of votes given.

Meaning.... "Precincts Reporting: 100.00%" is not true.

How can they say 100% without Athens? How can they legally certify the vote without Athens?

The Glib recount (if there is one) will not be a hand recount except for "spoiled" ballots.

Don't worry, Athens county will be in there in the final total.

Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 04:18 PM by keithjx
on http://ohvotesuppression.blogspot.com/, why the total added to each candidate in the provisionsal counts exceeds the amount "okayed". See, e.g., Allen County: According to elections officials, 1,098 provisional ballots were okayed out of 1,326 cast. The results are Bush +956, Kerry +661. The results add up to 1617, more than okayed or even cast. How does this work?

26. Some of those county totals look odd to me
Why did bush win so big in Richland County, for instance? That is an area of severe urban blight. I would have expected a higher turnout among Democrats.

It also looks like bushco's strategy to court Amish voters worked. In Holmes County the turnout was overwhelmingly for bush. That is an Amish stronghold. Usually the Amish don't vote. This year they voted - for bush. I don't think they were told we are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Amish may not be too happy when they find out that bushco left that little item out during visits.

the Amish are generally up on big issues. They may not have TVs in the home, but they can still read the paper or listen to someone's radio (on the job, etc) and they many times have access to someone else's TV.

not untill Dec 6th.

And IRRC Gore got 87% of the provisionals in 2000. My thought was tat with 3600 repub challengers in Ohio, the provisionals would be 90% or more for Kerry.
There were 156k provisionals--right, 78% were declared good so whats 905 of that.

Bushs lkead should have dropped to maybe 25k to 30k---aint buying what they are selling

40. I know people who voted for Bush in 2000 but wouldn't this time.
However, they wouldn't vote for Kerry - left the Prez blank. It does happen. I'm sure not all of them are legit but some probably are real no prez votes.

You know the over votes really were an intended vote for someone. I wish they would just go with the intent of the voter on this issue. If someone voted for Kerry and wrote in Kerry, I think it is clear the intent of the voter (this did happen in Florida in 2000).
