FDA Advisers Vote Against Female Sex Drug
Why do we need women with a high sex drive when we've got Barb and Jenna Bush?

By DIEDTRA HENDERSON, AP Science Writer

WASHINGTON - A hormone patch that works to restore a woman's sex drive should not win government approval until more studies are completed to determine the drug's risks, federal health advisers recommended Thursday.

Several members of the Food and Drug Administration's advisory committee said they were not satisfied with the number of women studied so far, the length of the studies and the modest benefits of the drug.

Procter & Gamble sought to market the testosterone patch Intrinsa to women who lost their libido after their ovaries were removed. The company told the committee that significant safety concerns had not come up in clinical trials and that there was no reason to delay approval of the first drug for female sexual dysfunction.

But the committee unanimously sided on the need for more safety data.

2. This thing may not even work
According to P&G's own statistics, according to the article, the patch only proved beneficial for 15% of the women who took it, and even for them it only improved their sex life by one "event" a month. I know the drug companies are desperate to develop a female Viagra, but a drug that won't do jack for 85% of the people who take it seems to have missed the mark.

Given the recent findings regarding increased cancer risks with HRT, I cannot blame the FDA for sending it back. Who would risk cancer for one sexual experience a month?
