San Diego Union-Tribune Columnist Quits (paper spiked Bush critic's piece)
SAN DIEGO -- James Goldsborough, a columnist at The San Diego Union-Tribune who frequently criticized the Bush administration, has quit after the publisher spiked one of his columns.

Goldsborough, 66, said Thursday that publisher David Copley pulled a column in which he sought to explain why Jewish voters overwhelmingly supported Democrat John Kerry over President Bush despite the administration's pro-Israel policies.

Harold Fuson, vice president and general counsel for The Copley Press Inc., which publishes the Union-Tribune, said Copley spiked the column because he thought it might offend some readers.

But Goldsborough, a columnist at the newspaper for 12 years and one-time Paris bureau chief for Newsweek, said he believed the right-leaning Union-Tribune was targeting moderates like himself and another columnist who was fired in April.

"There's just an effort here to control what columnists say and you can't do that. That's what columnists do. They're independent voices. And you might as well not have columnists if you're just going to bend their views to fit some editorial position," he said.

You can't keep starting things if those things already exist.

2. Just in time for our protest in front of the Union-Trib 12/9!
A protest of this newspaper's blackout of the stolen election story is slated for 3:30 pm on Thursday the 9th. I hope you'll all show up and help us show the UT that this town has a lot of pissed-off liberals who would actually like some UNBIASED news for a change!

FYI, there is a similar rally at Horton Plaza Sunday. See the CA section here for details.

3. Wish they'd give the heave-ho to that idiot Joseph Perkins
He's their insanely right-wing columnist that happens to be black.

And David Copley has some issues, too...rumors are that he's been in the closet all his life.

I don't get it...how blacks and gays can embrace Republicanism with such fervor. They must really hate themselves.

4. "... because he thought it might offend some readers."???
Bullshit!

This is a hypocrite taking the honest reasons of liberals and progressives who refuse to publish hate speech and applying it to poltical dissent from the Reichpublican Regime.

Do they publish Ann Coulter?
Do they publish Piggy Noonan?
Do they publisn the insane rantings and deceit of fascist fucks?

Yes.

5. geez, Goldsborough was the only moderate voice
in the otherwise conservative SD Union Tribune (one of the few papers to endorse Bush). He'll be missed. Good thing I cancelled my subscription years ago.

8. I love the comics...
... in the damn Union Trib. I don't wanna cancel.

Goldsborough was the only flower sticking up out of that pile of pigshit rag.

The UT is the only daily available in this tiny little town in SoCal we winter in, and I can't read everything online.

I hate that this country has become a one-opinion Fascist state!
