A man who was found guilty of shooting dead a police officer at close range and attempting to kill two of his colleagues was told yesterday he will be in jail for the rest of his life.

David Bieber, a powerfully built American bouncer, was convicted at Newcastle crown court of murdering PC Ian Broadhurst, a married 34-year-old officer, on Boxing Day last year. He was shot dead as he lay incapacitated on the ground pleading for his life.

Bieber, 38, was also convicted of the attempted murders of his colleagues PC Neil Roper, 45, and PC James Banks, 27, and three firearms offences.

Mr Justice Moses told Bieber that the aggravating feature of the case was that he shot PC Broadhurst through the head when he was already disabled. This was so grave that "I must order that the early release provisions shall not apply and you must spend the rest of your life in prison".

He was the clean-cut, all-American boy who excelled at sports.

The son of a respected high school principal, David Bieber was a well-mannered, friendly student. Yet, his life - and character - changed after he left college and began to indulge his interest in body building.

No-one would have believed the former US marine would eventually flee the United States - and murder a policeman in the UK.

But his former classmates at the Fort Myers High School in Florida are still coming to terms with the 38-year-old's conviction for the Boxing Day killing of Pc Ian Broadhurst in Leeds.

so he shall remain at "the pleasure of her Majesty",I think is the correct phrase.

3. A very fit and proper punishment
Perhaps someone can study this creature and determine just what it was that caused him to turn into a killer. And perhaps, just perhaps, the man will realize what he has done-and that he has the rest of his life to repent.
