Problems Cited at Afghan Detention Center

The findings by Brig Gen. Charles Jacoby Jr., first reported in Friday's editions of The Washington Post, have not been made public by the Pentagon (news - web sites).


Lawrence Di Rita, spokesman for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, told reporters that the Jacoby report is being reviewed by Gen. John Abizaid, head of U.S. Central Command, before its public release.


Jacoby found that problems at the detention facilities in Afghanistan created opportunities for the kinds of abuse that took place at Abu Ghraib and other U.S.-run prisons in Iraq (news - web sites).

The Post quoted a U.S. military spokesman in Afghanistan as saying Jacoby did not find any abuse during his visit. It said he did, however, find instances of unwarranted use of rectal exams instead of magnetic wands to search for contraband on detainees.
