Roadside Blast Kills U.S. Soldier in Iraq #1266 & #1267

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A roadside bomb killed a U.S. soldier and wounded five others in Baghdad on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

The attack raised to at least 991 the number of American troops killed in action since a U.S.-led invasion toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in 2003.

A roadside blast killed another U.S. soldier near the northern town of Baquba on Saturday.

I recall a woman from Michigan username "Mari333" who had a stepson in Iraq.

19. She is still posting
Her stepson is still in Iraq, and he still hates it. Her husband died recently. She has had a tough go of it.

2. Thanks for posting this
As is usual, responses are practically nil. 1266, 1267. Before we know it, it'll be 1500, then 2000. What's the magic number that'll finally wake people up?

3. The number is already over 100,000 PEOPLE DON"T CARE
The US public cares more whether Barry Bonds pill popping is causing the Sport's Books in Vegas to alter their odds.

6. I never had any illusions about
people caring about Iraqi deaths, despite the hypocritical cant about Saddam and genocide and rape rooms. Sooner or later though, Americans will start caring about American deaths. What I wonder is how many casualties do we have to have before people start realizing the disaster that is Iraq? I keep saying it'll take a Beirut moment to get the attention of the American public.

7. So maybe it's better if they just sleep
"...it'll take a Beirut moment to get the attention of the American public."

since when they're paying attention they're even worse. So much for everything we valued: peace, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. Now it's just tyranny and killing. We have become the beast.

8. Unless they bring it to our shores people will not care
Those who care now will get burned out.
Those who voted bush want to see nuclear warheads dropped on
brown-skinned people. They expect it. They almost demand it.

10. A Beirut moment would make us say 'Send More Troops! Nuke 'Em!"
Americans want entertainement for their TV box.

11. and I thought I was jaded and cynical.
Seriously though, I don't agree. I think Americans are teetering on the edge of being against this war. At least that's what the polls reflect. A Beirut moment, wherein a couple of hundred troops were killed, would I think propel people over the edge into active opposition.

13. I hope you are correct.
I don't see that kind of enthusiasm for doing the right thing
in my day to day interaction with the American public. You will always
find it here, but we are the rarest of exceptions to the rule.
We couldn't/didn't even manage to make our votes count, how are we
going to affect the course of the bush war monstrosity?
We are not.

14. Q: "how many casualties do we have to have before people start realizing
the disaster that is Iraq?"

A: the answer my friend is blowin' in the wind;
the answer is blowin' in the wind.

I think your parallels to Beirut are on ominous.
But it will have to be something more than 250+
marine dying in a single blast to wake people up.

The big difference is Iraq has oil and Americans
underneath it all ("democracy for iraq", "fighting
terrorism" "WMD" etc) are willing to trade 1200 plus
deaths for oil.

This war is about oil.

22. The price of oil has not dropped since the Invasion
So people aren't supporting the war because of low gas prices. I think it is still payback for 9/11 in a lot of people's minds. It's the "only good Arab is a dead Arab" mentality. That extends up to the white house.

20. Kick. And let's keep it kicked for each new death
up to, say, 1300. Shouldn't take long. I don't mean to sound either crass or cold, but I just don't want to let this go.

And not getting better in December, or since the "taking" of Fallujah.

26. Ah Mari
You said it- all we are about is shopping for the holidays- never mind the kids (and even some grandfathers) who've been shipped out to fight our war for oil. And that doesn't even take into account the Iraqi people- but who cares about them anyway? Certainly not Americans- heck, we don't care about our own soldiers over there, much less those *insert whatever racial epithet of choice*. Sad.

I hope you're doing well sweetie. The holidays are such a tough time to be without your family and friends.
