Report: Iran Has Tried Arrested Al Qaeda Members
Edited on Mon Dec-06-04 12:47 PM by wicket

Iran's judiciary has tried a number of arrested al Qaeda members and verdicts have been issued, a senior judiciary official was quoted as saying on Monday.

Tehran Justice Department head Abbasali Alizadeh told the semi-official Fars news agency Iran's "high-ranking officials are satisfied with the issued verdicts," but did not elaborate on what the verdicts had been.

News of the trials is likely to anger Washington, which has repeatedly called on Iran to hand over all al Qaeda suspects it is holding. Guilty verdicts sentencing them to long jail terms would make that an even more distant prospect.

Reuters could not immediately reach judiciary or government officials for comment.

1. It's more than the U.S. is doing
There are people in custody in Spain and Germany accused of aiding in the 9/11 plot who will likely walk free because the U.S. won't allow either country access to witness' held in Guantanamo or release needed information regarding 9/11. The Bush Administration doesn't really care about Al Queda or 9/11 one way or another.

4. Funny. Pakistan isn't doing it either.
Didn't they just give up looking for Osama? Maybe Al Qaeda is based in Iraq now, just like the pResident says!

7. They've already nixed a deal with Iran...
"News of the trials is likely to anger Washington, which has repeatedly called on Iran to hand over all al Qaeda suspects it is holding."

They've already nixed a deal with Iran. From Juan Cole:

"...So it transpires that the Iranians were willing to give up 5 key al-Qaeda operatives, whom they had captured, in return for MEK members.

Franklin, Rhode and Ledeen conspired with Ghorbanifar and SISMI to stop that trade. It would have led to better US-Iran relations, which they wanted to forestall, and it would have damaged their proteges, the MEK.

Since high al-Qaeda operatives like Saif al-Adil and possibly even
Saad Bin Laden might know about future operations, or the whereabouts
of Bin Laden, for Franklin and Rhode to stop the trade grossly
endangered the United States."

And now MEK spokespeople (an Iranian opposition group) are the very ones pushing for war with Iran in the media. Nice deal for the neocons, eh?
