Two WA counties face task of tallying touch-screen votes

SEATTLE - Most counties bracing for a statewide hand recount of the governor's race have boxes upon boxes full of ballots.
Not Snohomish and Yakima counties. They are the only two in Washington where people voted on touch-screen computers.

Before their recounts can begin, Snohomish and Yakima counties will have to print out paper ballots to record tens of thousands of votes cast at the polls November second.

Snohomish County has to print out more than 96,000 ballots. Election officials expect that will take five computers with five printers five days to complete.

printing out the ballots - can we tell if the votes have been changed before printing? NO

1. The 21st Century and we can't even come up with an open, reliable, and
trusted system. Methinks, it's because the politicans don't want one. I will refuse to vote on a "black box" system until
this is fixed. It would just be a waste of time anyway.

2. Exactly what I was thinking.
We need to have some oversight involved here.

6. What the help is the point?!?!
If the machines were mucked with, the printed ballots mean nothing.

Can you say *VOTER-VERIFIED* PAPER TRAIL?

This printing of the ballots will work just fine, though, if they have each voter come in and verify their vote. :)

7. Once printed, each one can be sent through an optical scanner to be
counted.
It's sort of like printing your own money. How much do you want?
