Chirac, Zapatero Phone Annan to Express Support
~snip~

"They both called Kofi Annan jointly to express their solidarity at a time when he is being unfairly attacked," a Spanish government spokesman told reporters.

Zapatero and Chirac, in the northern Spanish city of Zaragoza for a bilateral summit, discussed Annan's situation during a lunch and agreed to telephone him immediately, he said.

The French and Spanish position contrasts with that of President Bush (news - web sites)'s government which been cautious in its comments on Annan since congressional committees started investigations and a senator called for Annan's resignation.

Since Saddam's fall, there have been widespread allegations of violations of U.N. sanctions, many connected to the U.N. program but others involving oil smuggling to countries like Jordan and Turkey, known by the United States since 1991.

3. Our idiotic right wing has been able to convince our sickest citizens
that the UN is out to steal our precious bodily fluids, to take our youth and force them to toil soldiering all over the world, wearing "them little goddamned blue helmets," and that they are conducting secret exercises in remote parts of the country.

It's an open field when you are working with such helpless mental wrecks as our rightwingnuts. You can sell them anything if you act as if you are their good old bud, and letting them in on secret stuff furriners are plotting agin' them.

Once their sense of identification with an ambitious politician has been engaged, they are absolute tools for him, like rabid sheep with guns! Remember Joe McCarthy!

From the story:
Annan's son Kojo worked in West Africa for a Swiss firm, Cotecna, which inspected goods under the program and is under investigation. There is no evidence so far the younger Annan dealt with the Iraq program.

The French and Spanish position contrasts with that of President Bush (news - web sites)'s government which been cautious in its comments on Annan since congressional committees started investigations and a senator called for Annan's resignation.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) backed Annan Monday. Russia, China and Germany have also offered support.

4. Rep. Scott Garrett steps into the fray
Rep. Scott Garrett (news, bio, voting record), R-N.J., said the question shouldn't be whether Annan remains in charge. "The question is whether he should be in jail," he said
