1,000th U.S. Soldier Killed in Action in Iraq (1275 overall)
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 12:32 PM by Tab
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The number of U.S. troops killed in action in Iraq hit 1,000 Tuesday when the military said a soldier had been shot dead on patrol in Baghdad.

"One Task Force Baghdad soldier died of wounds received at about 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 7. The soldier was on patrol when the unit came under small arms fire," the military in Iraq said in a typically brief routine statement.

"The name of the soldier killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin."

Earlier in the day, the Pentagon had issued a revised combat casualty toll of 999, a figure which had risen sharply last month during the U.S. assault on Sunni Muslim insurgents in the city of Falluja. At least 71 Americans were killed there.

In all, 1,275 U.S. service personnel have died during the Iraq operation, launched with the invasion on March 20 last year. This figure includes accidents, suicides and other deaths not classed as being killed in action.

A total of 9,765 U.S. troops have been wounded.

Not including contractors, non-troop governmental workers, intelligence agents, civilians... and that's just us.

<sick sarcasm>
Imagine if he were just badly wounded, was awarded a silver star, a bronze star, and shrapnel for a purple heart, and then he ran for office 40 years later. He would be disgraced for his cowardliness.

Much better this way now that we know for sure what his contribution to the country is. Were he to run for office, he'd now be able to prove he died for his country.
</sick sarcasm>

Bastards.

8. Actually, I don't have the exact numbers anymore
but at the one year and nine month mark in Vietnam, the US had not sustained as many killed and wounded as in this current debacle.

9. Vietnam also started gradually
Vietnam didn't start with 150,000 troops right at the start, it started with the green barets and the "Advisors" and that number was increased incrementally. Unless you are counting the start of Vietnam with the Gulf of Tonkin and the introduction of 100,000 troops then?

10. So now they only report "KIA's"???
It seems as if they keep trying to minimize casualties by continually changing the categories they report. First it was all deaths. Then for awhile, it was only deaths "since major combat in April." Now it's only "soldiers killed in action."
