BAGHDAD, Dec. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Iraqi border guards seized a ship carrying smuggled crude oil and arrested its crew in southern Iraq on Tuesday, a border security commander said.
The crew, including eight Syrians, three Indians and 18 Iraqis, were arrested after the Iraqi border guards stopped their ship at Abu Felous port, southern Basra, Brig. Gen. Ali al-Moussawi, commander of the southern border guards said.
There were 1,950 tons of crude oil on the Ghanaian-flagged ship, which was owned by a Syrian merchant and heading to the United Arab Emirates, Moussawi said.
The arrested crew would be handed over to Iraqi court, he added.
Basra, some 550 km south of Baghdad, is the second largest city in Iraq after Baghdad and the only port on the gulf for the war-torn country.
