SF ready to accept deal but IRA photo remains sticking point

Sinn Féin is prepared to accept proposals to restore devolution to Northern Ireland, but the IRA will not allow itself be "humiliated" in the process, Mr Gerry Adams said today.

The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern confirmed this afternoon an IRA representative has met the head of the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD), General John de Chastelain.

At a press conference in Belfast this afternoon, Mr Adams reiterated his statement that Sinn Féin was prepared to accept the governments' proposals.

"I believe that Sinn Féin can say yes to the proposed political package, and I have conveyed this in writing to the Taoiseach and to the British Prime Minister," he said. "I am now satisfied that we have defended the fundamentals of the Good Friday Agreement."
