Ga. School Suspends 8-Year-Old Girl (actually, LA)
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 06:06 PM by Rose Siding
NEW ORLEANS -- An 8-year-old girl was suspended for nine days for bringing to school what appeared to be about 30 "Jell-O shots" -- though it was unclear whether they contained alcohol.

The incident occurred Nov. 29, as the girl stood after classes outside Geraldine Boudreaux Elementary School in Terrytown, a New Orleans suburb. A teacher spotted liquid dripping out of the student's bookbag and found what looked like the small cups of alcohol-laced gelatin that are sold in bars, schools spokesman Jeff Nowakowski said.

The girl told the principal that her mother, who works in a bar, makes alcoholic shots at home and sells them at work. The fourth-grader said her mother had instructed her to take the shots to school and sell them, three for $1, to make some money for Christmas, Nowakowski said.

It's hard to get good help these days. (When you're only hiring right wingers, that is.)

I really dislike the two-letter state abbreviations.

7. Imagine that...more knee-jerk South-bashing. Go figure....
My advice to you is to look at the dark underbelly of your own neighborhood/town/city before you start looking down your nose at crimes committed in the South.

I've lived all over the country and I can tell you for a fact that after you scratch the surface everything is the same.

28. True enough - we've got bush/cheney stickers riding around the
otherwise liberal neighborhoods here in West L.A. too.

(You'll recognize some of them when you see them parked - not only because of their bumper stickers but also because of the "well, then, why don't you enlist?" flyers I put on their windshields!)

30. Thanks
We are a sitting duck though. GW doesn't give a "rat's ass" about our barrier reefs being washed away nor does the federal government plan to prepare our city for a direct hit that may kill thousands. All of our escape routes are long bridges over water. The only one headed West on I-10 dips down below sea level to get past a train bridge, and that's before you even leave Orleans Parish. The other alternative route going West, Hwy 61, that is always shut down since it is usually underwater by the time folks can escape... which hundreds of thousands of poor folks cannot do.

When New Orleans goes, so does one of the oldest and most unique American cultures. No more Mardi Gras, French Quarter, Jazz Fest, etc. The University of New Orleans is the most racially integrated in the South, and Tulane University has some of the best medical research on the planet. I could go on...

Come to Mardi Gras this year! It starts very early - Fat Tuesday is on Feb. 8th.

:hi:

Enough to drive ME to drink - and I tend not to touch the stuff. Not into the taste, and too fattening, mainly.

12. Don't act all surprised y'all. Alcohol is a staple of our diet here.
I used to go to bars when I was her age. We still have children selling alcohol behind the bar in restaurants.

Want alcohol 24/7? Come to New Orleans.

Want to buy alcohol and not leave you car? We have drive thru daiquiri stops and in many small towns in Louisiana you can buy hard liquor at drive thru gas stations.

The girl is eight. Do you think they instruct 4th graders not to bring anything that anyone could ever think looked like a shooter to school? It's an absurd punishment.

The district should, however, check to see that the mother isn't really desperate for cash so the girl is well cared for.

20. Let me clarify
The girl should get a punishment... of oh, a harsh talk. The mother however, should be fined.

24. Why harsh?
Suppose she didn't know she wasn't supposed to do that? It's possible that she just thought she was selling jello. Do children really know what alcoholic jello shooters are?

If they actually do need money, how would the mother pay a fine? Maybe the mother was just foolish. Maybe she didn't realize that the item would be considered too alcoholic-looking.

Other fourth graders? The sixth graders?

Mom forgot to say- "Oh, and don't let the teachers catch you"?

Sheesh.

Although, if I was a fourth grader right about now, I'd be tempted to start drinking too!

17. Bullshit, 3 shots for a dollar isn't profitable at all
And no kid is gonna be able to come back for seconds.

This business plan just sucks, I don't believe it.

They should be three for 5 dollars, so you can clean them out before they drop dead :eyes:

21. The article says there might not even be alcohol in them!
Rush to judgement, anyone? If the mother is having her sell them three for a dollar, I bet there wasn't any alcohol in them. But even in that case, it was poor judgement on the mother's part. If there WAS alcohol in them, she should be turned in to CFS.
