Kitty, Cut Loose and Put Out (The Revenge of Smirk)
Kitty, Cut Loose and Put Out

By Richard Leiby
Wednesday, December 8, 2004; Page C03

After a relationship of more than 30 years, Washingtonian magazine and writer Kitty Kelley are divorcing, and the terms are not amicable. Kelley is in a snit because the mag unceremoniously booted her from the masthead of its current issue, citing her controversial book "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty." In an e-mail last week, Editor Jack Limpert lashed Kelley for what he called the book's partisan timing and its irresponsible reporting about President Bush:

"We are always willing to attack the policies, and the behavior, of the President," Limpert wrote to Kelley. "But it seems to us that the office deserves respect. We don't think we should attack a President personally -- his relations with his wife and family, his use of alcohol or other drugs, things like that -- without a very solid basis for doing so. . . . We felt strongly enough that we didn't want readers to feel that your appearance on the masthead meant we endorsed the book."

Kelley, a contributing editor who's been friends with Limpert for 32 years, says she was stunned to find her name dropped when she picked up the magazine. In an e-mail, she accused Limpert of being cowed by owner Philip Merrill, who she noted "has had a long relationship with George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Dick Cheney." (Merrill served on the Defense Policy Board during Bush's father's administration and currently heads the Export-Import Bank -- a position for which the president nominated him in 2002. Upon acceptance, Merrill stepped down as Washingtonian's publisher and his wife took over.)

8. The "office" is now a septic tank ... full of turds.
If it deserved respect, the current inhabitants would be in prison.

to doubt that we WILL get our country back.

6. Exactly, I was thinking just
the same thing. Once again, it's Hypocrisy Central in repukeland. It's okay for THEM to trash Clinton and Dems left and right for every little thing, real or imagined, under the sun, but heaven forbid anyone should even consider touching the sacred ground of repuke lives.

I'm so sick of the trashing of anyone who dares to breathe a word against our Great and Mighty Leader. Rarely, if ever, have I seen this kind of constant retaliation against those who print or say anything negative at all against him, and that is truly frightening. Who the hell do they think he is, King George? Uh....never mind, don't answer that.

5. Oh please
I thought "The Family" was quite well written, and nowhere near as juicy as I had been primed to believe from the RW whining about it. The only thing "irresponsible" about Kelley's reporting, is that "The Family" was not required reading for every registered voter in order to ensure they made responsible choices at the polls.

And I also didn't hear a lot of this "respect the office" BS when Clinton's relationships with his wife and family were speculated on.

Oh well, I suppose Limpert feels better now that he's back on Babs' Xmas card list.

10. The Washingtonian is a real crap magazine
It REALLY points out the cultural inferiority of the DC area to NYC, particularly when you compare it to the New Yorker..........

It's also kinda skewed towards the Virginia suburbs, not DC or Maryland.

11. Why did they not object to Kelley's other books?
She's written similar books on Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, the Royal Family, Sinatra, etc., and has appeared on Larry King and other venues to promote them. All of a sudden, her book is too hot to handle. Coincidentally, the subject is the Bush family.

12. OK, then, let's CELEBRATE his "use of alcohol or other drugs"
...the only challenge here is narrowing down the focus of the book. Do we want to discuss the alcohol and drugs he was using when he pissed on cop cars and yelled at his Pappy to go "mano a mano" with him, or do we want to discuss the alcohol and drugs he's using RIGHT NOW?

13. That's all right...
I had forgotten about the book, so as a result of this story I just went out and purchased it. Shame that she should be let go because she did the right thing and dared to put "the fuhrer" and his connections in the proper context. I'll happily contribute to her pocketbook and anyone else who will expose the Bushies for who they are, not what they pretend to be.

14. You know darned well, that if Kerry had won, she would be a "heroine"
This whole thing upsets me to no end, since newspapers had NO pangs of Conscience when they all jumped oon the "trash Clinton Bandwagon".. They delighted in the daily flogging..:puke:

The only plus side, is that Kitty will probably now just "retire" and start drawing that hefty pension she probably locked in years ago..and then she can go on the lecture circuit and make even MORE money :)

15. Bawhahahah
We don't think we should attack a President personally -- his relations with his wife and family, his use of alcohol or other drugs, things like that -- without a very solid basis for doing so.

Didn't stop you scum bums from attacking Clinton while we were at war.
After all a BJ is much worse, than dating a stripper. Smoking pot and not inhaling is much worse than DWI's and snorting cocaine. Going to war and honestly telling us why is much worse than lying our way into an illegal invasion. I would love to know which delusional drug this moron is on.

I don't read the magazine, so I don't really know. But I would be quite surprised if they treated Clinton this way.

On edit - I have the Kitty Kelly book, but haven't had the time to read it yet. This will motivate me to read it over the Christmas holidays.

You think they could have picked an even worse one from their archives? I doubt it x(

Limbert is a 70-year-old washed-up mouthpiece. Please express your displeasure with his double standard: jlimpert@washingtonian.com

22. Meanwhile Ken Starr gets to write lurid details about Clinton's affair
including the specific sexual acts and foreplay, and have it all published in the newspapers as if it were vital excerpts from the fucking Warren Commission or something.
