When a medic pulled the driver out of the car, it was clear he had suffered critical injuries, with part of his skull blown away, according to testimony during the Article 32 hearing.

or sick animal to put it out of its misery.

Would've been to let the medic do his damn job and try to save the guy's life; or, if the wound was mortal, at least let the medic stabilize the patient and try to ease the pain.

Shooting someone in the back of the head is murder, plain and simple. Hell, if they wanted to put the guy out of his misery, the Captain could've at least given him an overdose of morphine: his pain would have been considerably less, and he wouldn't have his brains splattered all over the place.

Dumbasses like this Captain are the reason for the Geneva Conventions in the first place...
