Father convicted in circumcision attempt
Father convicted in circumcision attempt

Wednesday, December 8, 2004
By STEPHANIE RICE, Columbian staff writer

A jury deliberated 40 minutes Tuesday before convicting a Ridgefield man of assault for attempting to circumcise his 8-year-old.

Edwin B. Baxter, 33, was polite after the verdict as he was handcuffed to be taken back to the Clark County Jail. He thanked his attorney and the prosecutor, who last week offered Baxter a plea deal that would've given the father of nine credit for the three months spent in custody and released him from jail. He declined. Now, Baxter faces up to three years and five months in prison.

A truck driver and fundamentalist Christian who wears a long beard, Baxter dressed in flannel shirts and work boots during his two-day trial and had a Bible with him in court. He did not testify before the jury of seven men and five women.

He did, however, make a statement to Judge James Rulli for the purpose of preserving his right to appeal on the grounds Rulli did not allow him to use his faith as a defense. Baxter said he decided to circumcise his 8-year-old, the eldest of his four boys, on Sept. 3 after he read in the Old Testament that males should undergo tthe procedure.

20. strange 'christian'
:7 ha

By the way I thought Jesus said that practice wasn't neccessary. Are these actual Christians? Technically they should only be reading the new testament. The old testament is a little nutty.

17. Female circumcision
involves cutting out the clitoris (usually with no anesthetic) then sewing up the labia, leaving only a small opening for urination and menstruation. This is done so that they are not tempted by sex because of the pleasure it can bring and so that their 'husband' (or whatever man they are sold to) knows for sure that the girl is a virgin. He gets the pleasure of splitting the sutures.

You tell me which would be more painful.

18. The ironic thing is if the guy is a "Bible-believing Christian"...
...is that the "Epistles" in the New Testament spend a huge amount of time talking about circumcision and how it is completely unnecessary for Christians!

22. Europeans vs. Americans
Europeans are mostly christians who do not circumcise their boys. Why is fundamentalism seemingly an American thing? Also, I don't think they have TV preachers and that born-again stuff in Europe. Can someone explain?

26. I remember when he
was arrested. He stated in the court room that he did this because the bible told him to. Here's the real rub, he's no longer allowed to see this child, however, the state can't keep him from seeing any of his other children. His wife is just as much of a wack job as he is...

31. He watches the sparrow...Anybody want to accept Jesus as a result?
Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 11:43 PM by Thurston Howell IV
From an essay, "How could God let this happen?" It discusses why God would let the children in the Oklahoma City Federal Building die:

Some one asked the question the other day, "If His eye is on the sparrow, why did He let these little ones fall ?" Good question. In Matthew 10:29, Jesus said, "one of them (the sparrows) shall not fall to the ground without your Father." Yes, God watches the sparrow, but He allows them to fall. He does not intervene to stop pain and suffering, but rather uses the hardships of life to teach us and draw us to Himself. Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." And those who do not love God, who are not saved ? It can work to their good if they open their eyes and see how short life is, and that we will all stand before God in judgment, and then repent of their sins, call on Jesus, and get saved.

This makes me feel a whole lot better!
