CA: Governor considers calling special election
Governor considers calling special election

By Ann E. Marimow

TIMES SACRAMENTO BUREAU

Sun, Dec. 12, 2004

SACRAMENTO - After his string of ballot measure successes, Republican
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger might call a special election next year to
force radical change on the Democratic-controlled state Legislature.

The governor and his advisers are considering a long list of proposals
to change the shape of legislative and congressional districts,
require rapid disclosure of campaign donations, impose new limits on
state spending and subject the Legislature to more public scrutiny.

If successful, Schwarzenegger could intimidate his competition for
2006, should he decide to run for re-election. If he fails, it would
be a blow to the governor's momentum at a critical time.

A California governor last called a special election in 1993. This one
would cost roughly $60 million and send voters statewide to the polls
for the sixth time in less than four years.

"I just don't see anything that requires that kind of urgent
attention," said UC Berkeley political scientist Bruce Cain. "It looks
suspiciously like it's there to keep Arnold amused and his advisers
paid."

7. Fortunately or Unfortunately I live here in California
Arnold does not need a advertising budget. The air-wave media loves Arnold and will parrot anything he says. Now the print media is a different story. For the most part The Los Angeles Times questions a lot of governor does and says. But name calling in a international forum (the Republican Convention) which Arnold did do (i.e. "Girlie Men"), does not give him a very good reputation. Hopefully some of Arnold's verbal blunders start to stick.

Thanks for the broad brush, though, I LOVE being stereotyped. Makes me feel just like a Southerner here on DU.

4. He is worse than Bush!

He is so dangerous because he hides behind his Kennedy wife and they both are power hungry.

We have got to stop this madness.

He is setting himself up for taking over CA with the voting machines and the Republicans will have installed another King in the WH.

It makes me furious that the people can't see through this gropper and phony old has been movie "star,"

They own the media and they own the voting machinez.

I don't know anybody who voted for Shickelgroper. Do you?

The only reason California didn't "vote" for Booosh** is because
it would have looked toooo suspicious.

That is a friend of mind that is a Republican.

She is an absolute fool.
She thinks that Arnold and his wife are just precious.

I told her he was a gropper and she said, "Oh no, he would never do that!"

I see he just did a menorah lighting ceremony and had a conference on 'women and families.'

Those are the exact opposite of what Bush would do.

I'm not so sure I like the redistricting idea though.

19. Why should Democrats fear electoral reform?
Gee, if the Democrats in Sacramento really believe they have the support of the electorate, why SHOULDN'T they support measures against gerrymandering?

I'm beginning to detect a genuine hostility towards popular elections from those on the left.

21. Of course the left is hostile to popular elections
The average voter is pretty middle of the road. Neither far right nor far left. Even in a left-leaning state like California, voters have chosen to ban governemnt services to illegal aliens and prohibit racial preferences in government hiring and school admissions.

Unfortunately, I don't trust people like Schwarzenegger to carry it out with honesty and transparency, seeing as how I'm pretty sure he didn't get into office honestly.

33. question - why would this require a "special election" (and the cost)
why not just put it on the next, regularly scheduled election as a ballot initiative?

35. Because it's crooked.
Our Governor, Rick "Good Hair" Perry, called a special election for "tort reform". A general election was already scheduled a couple of months later.

It was unpopular enough it would probably have failed on the general ballot. But, because it was voted separately, those who really were for limiting damages turned out in droves. So tort reform passed. Has medical care become easier to get? Have malpractice insurance premiums gone down? Of course not.

Now is the time for the Californians to show what they're made of.
