Is there a draft in the wind?
Is there a draft in the wind?

http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-draft12.html

December 12, 2004

BY SCOTT FORNEK Political Reporter

Henry Bowles can't believe how many classmates at Northwestern
University passed the word along as gospel in the days before last
month's election.

"It's just astounding," says Bowles, 20, a junior and president of the
College Republicans on the Evanston campus. "They would say, 'Well,
you know Bush really is going to reinstate the draft.'

"I would say, 'No, that would be political suicide, and here is why it
won't happen.'"

Among college and some high school students and on the Internet, it is
the hot topic, the buzz -- the rumor that won't go away.

2. I'm be more surprised if there ISN'T a draft
that's for sure. Unless * changes his mind and we just bail from Iraq. OF course, I'd be less surprised to see pigs fly than have that happen.

Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 09:00 AM by The Zanti Regent
...we will outsource.

We'll offer to hire Indians, Chinese and Africans for, say, $100 a month to serve in our Army. Perfect with GOP logic, pay them $100, no VA benefits...

And I guess Halliburton will be calling the shots on this!

11. Brrrrrrrrrr......................
Yup. You can close the door but there is going to be a draft. Col. Hackworth has had some interesting articles and comments on his site, (don't know how to link them).

A friend of mine who I was in high school with has been called up.....he is 55 YEARS OLD. He forgot(?)to resign his officer commission way back when, (thats the story I'm told).

A DRAFT will change the rules of the game, because then (unfortunately), everything will hit close to home.

14. Back door and this are what they are doing.
Every one I know think it will come back but I think hired people may be more in the works. After all when Dem had congress for 40 years they did pretty much as they wanted so the GOP will do it now. Paying high rates to Companies to have paid killers will work better. Some stock holders and owners will get really rich and I am willing to bet they will be some of the people who sit in congress or really near to them. And we the tax payers will be doing the paying. Wage people not those other people who have saving and stocks. After all they are the people that make the country work. Right? I heard Bush say it.

10. A Coup on the way in Saudi Arabia?
A panelist on Chris Matthews this morning thinks there is the possiblity the fundamentalists will try to take over Saudi Arabia sometime in the next four years. You know the BFEE would never stay out of that mess.

22. Fuck the Saudi Royal Family
They're half the reason why we're in this mess now. If they go down in a popular revolt, good riddance to them, I say.

The Bush family represents the other 50%.

25. A revolt in Saudi Arabia would do nobody any good. In fact,
it would be highly dangerous for the whole region and that means for all of us. That region is a witches cauldron already and the US keep stirring the brew.

27. All the more reason we need to get out of there.
The worst part of it is that we have become so dependent upon oil for everything in this country. We're like addicts and the Saudis are the dope dealers who supply our fix.

I realize, of course, that there is no easy way out of this now. But I still can't help but vent as I see the madness of our situation.

A different kind of draft

Discussion of reinstating the draft tends to bring to mind Vietnam-era images of infantry units beefing up with young men fresh out of high school. According to a Wall Street Journal article published Wednesday, however, the young men and women who may have the most reason to be worried right now about being conscripted for military service are the ones just out of med school.

"The Selective Service System said it is reviewing a little-known contingency plan for drafting physicians, nurses and other health professionals, causing concern at the American Medical Association, which voted yesterday to communicate with the agency on the issue."

"People are concerned that it might be a doctors' draft," said Sandra F. Olson, chairwoman of the council of medical education for the AMA.

"If authorized, about 36,000 health-care workers could be selected from 60 specialties, including anesthesiology, mental health, emergency medicine and neurology. Akin to a general conscription, selection would start with the youngest registrants."

17. But * said 'THERE WILL BE NO DRAFT SO LONG AS I AM THE PRESIDENT.'
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 10:03 AM by HypnoToad
And I have no sympathy for the short-sighted idiot cretins who voted for *, who couldn't see beyond the letter "R". Especially if they do get drafted.

And that's his EXACT quote, and enunciation as he was quite bold about his statement. That's why they're hauling in 70 year old vets right now, they don't want * to look like the liar he most obviously is. They'll do anything to side-step the issue, possibly so much as to engineer or allow a terror attack to change peoples' mindsets. And looking at the last 4 years, you know the people WILL fall for it. Again.

19. Why not draft the mercenaries already there?
But then that might cut into the war profiteering of the corporations who hired them. And that's what the invasion is all about.

24. There will either be a draft ...
or the neocons will have to scale back military operations.

Iraq is a woeful quagmire. We don't have enough boots on the ground to control the cities. Units are being run into the ground with continual missions. The neocons desperately need more troops.

I really have no idea how this will transpire, but the fact is - the military, especially the Army, is desperate for some troops.

They'll push it through somehow. Repubs are so confident now that
they think they can do anything without reprecussions anyway,
(and they may very well be right) so what will stop them?

Once it is enacted, there will be a lot of "but I didn't know they
were going to draft EVERYBODY!", but then it will be too late.

What easier way is there to eliminate the what is left of our freedom,
all in one go? In the Army, there is no freedom of speech,
there is no freedom of assembly, there is no freedom of the press,
and even freedom of religion is fading fast. Of the rest of the
Bill of Rights, all that will remain is the right to bear arms.
(We will have lost the right NOT to).

Elections? forgetaboutit! All Democratic votes will be sent
by un-armored Humvee through Fallujah.

Onward Xtian Soldiers
