SADDAM ON HUNGER STRIKE
Ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and 11 top leaders of his regime have gone on hunger strike in their US detention centre.

Saddam was captured by US forces last December and faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

"We have reliable information that Saddam Hussein and 11 other prisoners began a hunger strike to protest ill-treatment," Badiaa Aref Ezzat, the lawyer of former deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz said.

He is being held in US custody in a secret location in Iraq and has reportedly received treatment for an enlarged prostate gland, hernia problems and eye trouble.

1. Not to sound rude or crass
but who cares? Let the asshole starve. I'm sure he eats better than a lot of people in the world are at this moment; people who have never done anything to deserve hunger. So if Saddam Hussein doesn't want to eat, I'll bet there are a lot of people in Iraq alone who would like to have his meals.

2. Once we start differentiating who is allowed a hunger strike and
who isn't there can never be an effective hunger strike again, I fear. Hunger strikes are a weapon ONLY because the authorities aren't by human standards allowed to let them starve.

8. If Sadist dies, so does the scoop with his past friendship with Rumdrinker

Otherwise I could care less if Sadist starved to death.

And you're right, a lot of people don't deserve hunger.

Edit: Spelling

9. The US doesn't want him to live because he knows too much
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 11:38 AM by goclark

I am not debating the merits of his past terrible deeds.

I am suspicious of anything that the US government does to anyone.

Why should they let him starve to death?
A fate worse than death for him would be that the Iraqi people would see him on trial and decide what should happen to him.

This way, the US government is allowing us to believe that HE wants to die and then he can not get a "fair" trial.

My concern is that the US, once again, does not demonstrate fairness and people all over the world will see him as a hero if he is to die as a result of a "hunger strike,"

If I am not mistaken, are they allowing anyone to see him? Shouldn't the Red Cross or some other organization be allowed to determine his condition?

Just asking.

10. Precisely.
There is NO WAY in hell that the US (under the current administration) would ever allow Saddam to take the stand and testify about what he knows. No freakin' way.

11. At first they were saying that he had cancer

I suppose since he didn't die fast enough they are changing it to other ailments.

Now they want us to believe that he just didn't like the way he was treated.

Flame me if you want to any body, but justice for one is the same justice that we want given to everyone.

They can kill Saddam and say he just wanted to be on a hunger strike.

They can steal the votes and say we just couldn't accept the fact that we lost. We couldn't "get over it."

"One nation, with justice, for ALL."

Huum, those words don't sound right to me anymore.

13. "The US doesn't want him to live because he knows too much"
I'm with you on this one. Why would the U.S., who has total control over the news on Saddam share with the world the fact that he is on a hunger strike? Hmmm.....maybe they are preparing for his death by getting people ready to accept it as natural or even self caused.

I hear the man has cancer of some sort...he won't be missed by very many.

14. US denies Saddam on hunger strike
The US military in Iraq (news - web sites) denied that ousted president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) was on hunger strike in his American detention centre.

"This absolutely does not involve Saddam. He's in good condition and is continuing with his normal routine, which includes taking his meals," said Lieutenant Colonel Barry Johnson, a coalition spokesman on detention operations in Iraq.

"I'm trying to determine what grain of truth there might be about the other guys. A few of them might have been turning back some of their meals" but they were not on hunger strike, he said.

The Iraqi lawyer of former deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz told AFP earlier that Saddam and 11 top officials of his toppled regime had been on hunger strike since Friday.

15. US says lots of things. Should I blindly believe every article they say?
Dunno either way, don't care except that with Saddam's death goes any information linking him with Rumsfeld during the 1980s - which mustn't be all that worthwhile if Sadist there wants to starve to death. :eyes:

19. Didn't I just hear that Saddam
was going to subpoena Rumsferatu and people from Poppy Bush's and Reagan's cabinet? Just the other day?

And don't think that IF they wanted him alive Saddam could just go on a hunger strike and starve to death.
They have their ways of making you eat if they want to.
I agree... this is a setup

25. As ludicrous as the actions of my nation's leaders have been...
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 09:24 PM by 0rganism
...I can't even cook up any righteous anger against a monster like Saddam Hussein anymore. So he killed and starved hundreds of thousands of his citizens? Big deal, we've managed to hurt them just as much with the occupation and the invasion and the sanctions before that, not to mention that we helped to prop his lousy ass up in the first place.

Fuck it. Let him starve, or go on trial, or whatever. I don't even care about him anymore. I'm sure he'll quietly drop off the radar like Manuel Noriega when he's outlived his usefulness to the propaganda machine. It's not like he'll be allowed to bring up anything interesting in his defense anyway. Justice? What the fuck is that? Just another seven-letter word we've managed to rob of its original meaning, soon to be the name of a popular sedan or maybe an X-box game.
