At least seven people have been killed and 17 wounded, none of them US troops, when a car bomber struck at an entrance to Baghdad's Green Zone.

A police officer who declined to be identified said the blast occurred when a car that had been waiting in line to enter the zone at the western Harithiya gate exploded as it drove up to the checkpoint on Monday morning. Several other vehicles were also destroyed in the blast.

The blast, at 9am (0600 GMT), just when many Iraqis were going to work in the zone, shook buildings across Baghdad.

Staff at the city's Yarmuk hospital, where civilian casualties are generally taken, said they had received seven bodies and were treating 17 people for injuries.

Another day another horrific occurance.

~snip~
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide car bomber killed 13 people Monday next to the heavily fortified area in central Baghdad housing the interim government and U.S. embassy, and eight U.S. Marines died in combat in western Iraq (news - web sites).

In Baghdad, a vehicle waiting in line to enter the Green Zone at its western Harthiyah gate exploded as it drove toward the checkpoint, Iraqi police said.

Hospital officials said that 13 people were killed and 15 wounded in the suicide blast. The U.S. military said there were no injuries among its troops.

The international zone has been the scene of frequent attacks by insurgents during the past 18 months, killing and wounding dozens of people in car bombings or mortar barrages.
