President warns that violence could spawn 'Iraqi Hitler'
The Times
By Philippe Naughton, Times Online

Ghazi Yawar, the interim Iraqi President, has given warning that instability could spawn an "Iraqi Hitler" if his country's citizens continue to feel humiliated and despondent like the Germans after their defeat in the First World War.

In a series of media interviews on a trip to London, Iraq's political figurehead also criticised Washington for its disastrous decision to dismantle Iraq's security forces after its invasion last year - which paved the way for a breakdown of law and order.

"We could have screened people out instead of screening them in and this could have saved us a lot of hassle and problems," Mr Yawar told the BBC.

Mr Yawar's criticisms of Pentagon policy in Iraq came a year to the day after the capture of Saddam Hussein created a short-lived euphoria among the US coalition and its civilian administrators.

40. I got curious, too, so I took a run to google, and found it.
The facts about "Iraqgate," one of the most complicated and least understood foreign policy scandals in American history, have gradually emerged since the triumph of U.S.-led forces in the 1991 Gulf War. During the tense months before the war began, President George Bush denounced Saddam Hussein as the "Butcher of Baghdad" and "worse than Hitler." But according to investigative reporters, former officials and congressional investigators, Bush and other high-ranking U.S. officials had given secret support to the Iraqi dictator for years prior to Operation Desert Storm. In fact, the Iraqi military machine that Bush sent half a million troops to confront was partly armed and financed by the United States.

Worse than Hitler
By now it's a cliche to describe dictators as "worse than Hitler", but apparently our leaders actually believe it :
The worst ruler in world history is Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the Pentagon said on Monday. "The Iraqi people will be free of decades and decades and decades of torture and oppression the likes of which I think the world has not ever seen before," Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke told a Pentagon news conference.
Now I'm no history professor, but didn't Hitler kill 12 million people? Assuming Saddam Hussein has killed 100,00 - 200,000 people, that still puts him behind Stalin, Chairman Mao, Pol Pot, and Idi Amin. I know it's pointless to be comparing degrees of evil, but let's get a little perspective here.

33. too much banter on this thread
The concept of a tyrant rising from the ashes of Iraq's defeated citizenry is all too real.

Bush gives the appearance of being a total doofus. But I don't think a doofus could fuck up Iraq anything close to how he has. I am quite convinced this has been his plan all along, as I can think of no other way to explain it.
