Judge who wore blackface to party suspended
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A judge who wore blackface makeup, handcuffs and a jail jumpsuit at a Halloween party will be suspended for six months, the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled Monday.

The justices voted 5-2 to suspend Judge Timothy Ellender for a year without pay for dishonoring his position, but to defer half of that penalty. Ellender will lose more than $50,000 in pay, one judge noted.

Ellender, who is white, testified the costumes worn by him and his wife — she was dressed as a policewoman — were meant only as a joke to show he was her prisoner. The party's host, Ellender's brother-in-law, was dressed as Buckwheat.

The justices agreed Ellender did not mean to insult blacks. Nevertheless, they ordered him to take a sociology course "which will assist him in achieving a greater understanding of racial sensitivity."

In our new PC world it was really dumb for a judge to do this. He should have known that it would cause problems.
No, it was really dumb for a REPUBLICAN judge to do this.

20. So, he shouldn't have gotten caught!
Fuckers.

When will those knuckle-dragging confederate flag wavers learn that they live in AMERICA, and not some treasonous confederation of inbred Nazis?!

saigon68, will you please post that photo you have of the two victims of lynching in Mississippi? It has been removed from all the websites I know concerning the American Holocaust.

21. Here it is --Its Indiana 1930

I love the adoring young people on a date-- mugging the camera.

Lynching 1930

A mob of 10,000 whites took sledgehammers to the county jailhouse doors to get at these two young blacks accused of raping a white girl; the girl’s uncle saved the life of a third by proclaiming the man’s innocence. Although this was Marion, Ind., most of the nearly 5,000 lynchings documented between Reconstruction and the late 1960s were perpetrated in the South. (Hangings, beatings and mutilations were called the sentence of “Judge Lynch.”)

23. I say we go back in time to the Civil War era
and grant the South their wish. Seriously, by now, we would've been WAY better off, and not have to worry about these freaks ruining our country.

25. Not me!
How much longer do you think slavery would have lasted? Jim Crow may have become President of the South too. Maybe they would have joined Hitler, giving him air bases in which to bomb the crap out of the North... see where that might get us, wishing things like that?

The South will rise one day for sure, but it ain't gonna be those "Southern Heritage" types. Plus, Latinos will be the majority one day... hope springs eternal! :)

9. How long before this guy has a judge show?
"Minstrel Justice." His brother dressed as Buckwheat would be the bailiff. I'm sure the wingnuts who will make him into some martyr of political correctness, like Rush would tune in.

Jesus Christ, how could this judge be so clueless? Isn't a judge supposed to have good judgement. He should be removed form the bench.

11. That judge accurately reflected much of the 'justice' system's attitude
toward and treatment of the African-American community. The history of US policing and criminal prosecution is quite literally the history of slavery and long-lingering legacies of slavery.

Even in a Northern city like Minneapolis, let alone in the Deep South, ALMOST HALF of young African-American men are arrested EVERY YEAR, and are enmeshed in a system of near-slave domination of their lives by arbitrary, contemptuous, and heavily-armed government officials. A Minneapolis civil-rights lawyer has turned amateur filmmaker to produce an award-winning, very political, radical movie about this issue, starring Roger Guenveur Smith (of "K Street" fame on HBO last spring).

See the movie's very-real "factsheet" on institutionalized racism in the Minneapolis justice system, at http://www.jujitsufilms.com/justice/factsheet.htm .

This is one of the most crucial issues in the lives of the "Democratic base", yet NO nonminority Democrat even broached the subject during the campaign, let alone proposed that anything be done about it. This is why we're living in Republican hell--Democrats are ignoring the issues that are most important to the Democratic base. Only tangential discussion of this issue even takes place on DU.

12. You're right, this is a huge issue
If you dug 3 or 4 pages into the campaign sites of leading white candidates, you could find statements about racial profiling in law enforcement.

The Dems need to seriously tackle this along with felony disenfranchisement and Jim Crow intimidation, or else they will never be able to mount a successful 50 state strategy.

24. HOW SOON WE FORGET

Birmingham 1963

For years, Birmingham, Ala., was considered “the South’s toughest city,” home to a large black population and a dominant class of whites that met in frequent, open hostility. Birmingham in 1963 had become the cause célèbre of the black civil rights movement as nonviolent demonstrators led by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. repeatedly faced jail, dogs and high-velocity hoses in their tireless quest to topple segregation. This picture of people being pummeled by a liquid battering ram rallied support for the plight of the blacks.
