Election Official Says 561 Ballots Wrongly Rejected in Washington Governor's Race

SEATTLE (AP) - The election director in Seattle's King County said Monday that hundreds of absentee ballots were mistakenly rejected in the heavily Democratic stronghold - enough to swing the close governor's race to Democrat Christine Gregoire.

A statewide hand recount is under way across Washington state after Republican Dino Rossi came out ahead of Gregoire by just 42 votes out of 2.9 million cast.

King County Elections Director Dean Logan said he will ask the county Canvass Board on Wednesday to amend the results of the Nov. 2 election in his county. Agreement is likely; Logan has a seat on the three-person board, and one of the other members is a Democrat.

Logan said election workers mistakenly rejected 561 absentee ballots because they thought signatures on the ballots did not match original voter registration records.

This seems like a pretty strong case for Gregoire. I've seen how these signatures get checked on the computer, and I'm not surprised that elections officials did not take the next logical step--after all, they had the better part of a million votes to count in King County--what possible difference could less than a thousand votes make? (sarcasm, of course)

This really could do the trick for Chris, but she'll need every bit of those votes to work for her--she continues to lose ground to Rossi. She's lost a net 46 votes so far, with many GOP counties left to report. She'll have to make up at least a hundred votes if she wants victory.

3. Well, that's stupid
my signature has changed drastically since I registered to vote. I worked with attorneys - they'll get you to change your sig faster than anything I know. Apparently, my sig was too easy to forge, so I had to work on coming up with a "forge-free" signature (not that there is any such thing).

4. Suspicion confirmed
The WA State Pug party has yet to come up with a credible gubernatorial candidate, and Dino Rossi is not one of them. He is a Dubya wannabe, the last fricking thing this state needs is that creep. I figured Chris Vance and his troop would pull out all the stops to keep Gregoire from winning.

5. Some freepers
have been writing LTE reminencent of 2000 calling for an end to the counting and calling on Christine G. to quit. I'm sure they would be doing that if Rossi was behind-not!

6. Yes, I feel a win for Christine Gregoire coming on!
A sweet reversal of fortunes in her favor I hope.

However, he said that the signatures simply were not on file in the county's computerized voter registration system and that original registration records should have been checked.

"We need to correct the error and count those votes," Logan said in a statement.

One of the rejected ballots belonged to King County Council Chairman Larry Phillips, The Seattle Times reported.

"I was under the absolute impression not only I voted, but followed the instructions correctly," Phillips said. "If it can happen to the King County Council chairman, it can happen to anyone."

Count all the votes!!

7. Were these termed "wrongly rejected" after the councilman found his name
A Seattle councilman found his name on the list of "rejected" ballots today. I wonder if they changed to "wrongly rejected" because of his influence? If so, perhaps one more person now may understand what at least part of the problem is.
