College Criticized for Recruiting Postcard
RETE, Neb. - A private college is raising eyebrows with a recruiting postcard that shows a man surrounded by women and says students have the opportunity to "play the field."

Doane College sent the cartoon postcard last week to about 13,500 prospective students in California.

One frame shows student playing football for the Doane Tigers, with a caption that reads: "Finally, a place where he could work toward the career of his choice. And also play the field."

The next frame shows him talking to a group of attractive women and is captioned: "And play the field some more."

Some faculty members say the postcards objectify women and could lead prospective students to get the wrong idea about the four-year, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ.

3. Sex sells but this is inappropriate for a college
This is just plain stupid. Sex sells but this is the wrong way to market a college.

10. There are lots of things colleges do that is inappropriate
At least they are telling the truth about life on the ground. Females in college are objectified. That is the truth. I do not like them perpetuating this behavior, though.

Colleges do a lot of things colleges have no business doing. First priority should be educatiing students. Second priorty should be research. Instead, first priority is sports, second priority is money. Students come down someplace between mowing the lawn in front of the president's house and redecorating the admin building for the 3rd time in 10 years. Research is a priority only as long as it brings in money. College should not be about "scoring," inane rules, raking in cash, partying, and all that other crap that takes focus off education and research.

4. If they had a companion card
...displaying a female athlete, and then the same woman surrounded by a bunch of good looking fellows, there would be no controversy other than the standard "piss poor taste" complaints, and moanings about how the present generation is too "loose" in the sex department (which is kind of funny, seeing as most of the people bitching about "today's youth" were getting laid like crazy back in the 60's....or maybe they are simply jealous because they didn't get any back then!).

But the fact that they are targeting men (Come to our school, and get some poo-say!) is just idiotic, and suggests a less than rigorous educational standard.

I'm waiting for the school postcards that show some poor kid sitting in the sandbox outside Falluja, bleeding, with an alternative picture of him sitting in the classroom. It'll say something like "DRAFT? Pay full price for tuition, and you too could get a deferment!"

8. The United Church of Christ had its ad banned by CBS and NBC
CBS, NBC refuse to air church`s television advertisement
QUOTE
The CBS and NBC television networks are refusing to run a 30-second television ad from the United Church of Christ because its all-inclusive welcome has been deemed "too controversial."
The ad, part of the denomination's new, broad identity campaign set to begin airing nationwide on Dec. 1, states that -- like Jesus -- the United Church of Christ seeks to welcome all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.
According to a written explanation from CBS, the United Church of Christ is being denied network access because its ad implies acceptance of gay and lesbian couples -- among other minority constituencies -- and is, therefore, too "controversial."
