'Compassionate' Bush widely misunderstood: Schieffer
"The US ambassador to Australia, Tom Schieffer, says it is disappointing that President George W Bush is so often misunderstood around the world........

""His critics like to portray him more in caricature than character.

"The George Bush that I have known through the years is often misunderstood by the public, especially in foreign lands. I really don't know why that is, but it is.

"The George Bush that I know is a man of enormous compassion and concern for his fellow man."

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200412/s1265800.htm

I think it is more disappointing most of America doesn't understand what a fool that man is. And of course bush has compassion and concern for his fellow man; as long as he is not Iraqi, gay, poor, a soldier, European etc.

4. when will these neocons define what they're saying and doing?
Instead of classifying everything as secret, doing the opposite of what they say, saying the opposite of what they say (9/13/01 to 3/13/02, no less...), and so on?

"The George Bush that I know is a man of enormous compassion and concern for his fellow man."

Um, I judge whether someone is compassionate based on their ACTIONS, not their WORDS.

bush's actions say he is not only lacking compassion, but actually feels complete animosity for the world and for other Americans. I am embarrassed he was even BORN in this country and can call himself an American. That's how completely compassionless he is (again, going off his actions, a far more accurate measure than words).

holding a leash, tied around a man's neck.

17. Misunderstood? BAH!!! This man must be suffering some delusional,...
,...mental illness.

This sheltered, "ivory, white tower", kind of man can never be characterized as having enormous compassion for his fellow man (other than, of course, the rich and powerful men who have surrounded him his entire life)? He is too ignorant to even have a clue about common folks' lives and struggles.

18. Just to recap....
...Bush got rich on the backs of the taxpayers (see the Texas Rangers stadium funding history and how Bush reaped a huge bounty from a modest investment).

...won the Republican nomination in 2000 due to money, connections, name recognition, and the vicious trashing of a respected veteran.

...won a second term through the vicious trashing of a respected veteran.

...campaigned at rallies of carefully screened supporters and stirred up hatred towards select groups of Americans (I heard the Bush stump speech and the reactions a lot, and only Mark Leibovich of The Washington Post correctly captured the tone of animosity at such rallies).

...has sought to strengthen the advantage held by the top 2 percent of taxpayers (i.e., by seeking to end the estate tax, tax on investments, etc.).

...has sought to remove benefits for the non-wealthy (by seeking a consumption tax, ending the tax-exempt status of medical insurance benefits, etc.).

In short, Bush HAS no character, he's not misunderstood, and the rest of the world knows exactly what he is.

29. "`Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation,....
From: "Devil May Care" by Tucker Carlson, Talk Magazine, September 1999, p. 106

"Bush's brand of forthright tough-guy populism can be appealing, and it has played well in Texas. Yet occasionally there are flashes of meanness visible beneath it.

While driving back from the speech later that day, Bush mentions Karla Faye Tucker, a double murderer who was executed in Texas last year. In the weeks before the execution, Bush says, Bianca Jagger and a number of other protesters came to Austin to demand clemency for Tucker. 'Did you meet with any of them?' I ask.

Bush whips around and stares at me. 'No, I didn't meet with any of them,' he snaps, as though I've just asked the dumbest, most offensive question ever posed. 'I didn't meet with Larry King either when he came down for it. I watched his interview with , though. He asked her real difficult questions, like 'What would you say to Governor Bush?' 'What was her answer?' I wonder.

'Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, 'don't kill me.'

36. It goes back much farther than that
"An ambassador is an honest man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country" - Sir Henry Wotton, 1568-1639, English ambassador to Venice, quoted in Izaak Walton's Life, 1651.

Thanks for that nugget of wisdom. I shouldn't be surprised that even the Jacobeans should have been that sophisticated even in the early 17th century.

And this guys is supposed to be a diplomat?

It's pretty obvious to anyone with eyes and ears why that is- the man is petty, dishonest, fails to treat people with respect, arrogantly refuses to compromise or even consider reality based policies, and can't even speak his own language competantly.

He's shown no evidence whatsoever of any compassion for "his fellow man" and people abroad understand that quite clearly even if ignorant, propagandized mercan's don't.

46. It's very true that he's misunderstood...
but that is by the religious, who think he is a "godly" man, or by macho types, who thinks he's actually tough, instead of a sniveling, cowardly little spoiled rich boy, who went AWOL, and let others fight and die in a war he approved of but wouldn't fight himself.

He is indeed misunderstood by a lot of Americans, who don't realize how evil, heartless, and sociopathic he really is.
