China shifts from receiving to giving foreign aid
http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/story/0,7369,1373830,00.html

China is set to complete the transition from aid recipient to international donor in the next year, the head of the world's biggest humanitarian agency said yesterday as he announced plans to phase out food support for Beijing and introduce a new period of cooperation to help poor countries in Asia and Africa.

In a sign of how market economics and disease have transformed the world order, James Morris, the executive director of the World Food Programme, said the shift was a sign of China's success in combating poverty, while Africa had become less able to help itself because of the Aids epidemic.

...

History, however, shows that communities in every country have a habit of forgetting the poor once they become rich.

Mr Morris pointed out that it would cost only $5bn (£2.6bn) to feed the 300 million children currently living in hunger around the world, but these funds have not been forthcoming.

1. On Bush's watch, China is becoming a superpower.
Even as he flushes America's pre-eminence right down the drain.

:grr:

2. I can't stand W, but China would become a superpower regardless of
who is/was running the show. Now that they have embraced an economic system that actually produces wealth, with their resources (both natural and human) it is merely a matter of time.

5. China is rising rapidly
and the USA is falling rapidly. Remember it didn't take long for the super power of the Soviet Union to collapse.
