Bush Pledges Strong-Dollar Policy
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush pledged Wednesday to work with Congress to reduce the United States' huge deficits to assure markets that his administration supports a strong dollar.
"The policy of my government is a strong-dollar policy," Bush said during an Oval Office meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

"We're going to take this issue on seriously with the Congress," the president said, after Berlusconi raised concerns about the dollar's fall.

<snip>

Despite White House expressions of support, the administration has not taken action to prop up the dollar. During Bush's four years in office, not once has the administration intervened in currency markets to support the dollar or done anything else to stop the dollar's slide.

Still more economic strategery from the world's most powerful blithering idiot (from the article)...

Bush noted that in addition to the budget deficit, America suffers from a huge trade deficit.

"That's easy to resolve," Bush said. "People can buy more United States products if they're worried about the trade deficit."

Well, now...that settles that, then.

'Cause there are lots of American made products around to buy these days... :eyes:

Do they think if they just keep saying that the dollar is strong, miraculously, it will be? Certainly seems like it.

We gotta remove the evil Saddam right away, but we could give a shit
about the economy or the dollar or jobs or anything, that's all going
to be left to the "magic of the market", i.e. to the manipulations of
Shrubite corporations.

The first one is really special. I think he's telling all those
foreigners that if they want our deficits to come down, they need to
buy more stuff from us, i.e. he does not intend to do squat about it.
It's like he WANTS to frost them.

13. Oh, Jesus Christ!
This is Bush's solution to the trade deficit:

"People can buy more United States products if they're worried about the trade deficit."

That's like saying the unemployment can be eliminated by people just going out and finding jobs. The administration's actual trade policies are just kicking the door further open.

Look, there are actually good things about a weak dollar, even though it doesn't address the trade balance with China (whose currency is tied to the dollar). But nothing in US policy supports a stronger dollar.

How can any president come out with stuff like this and keep a straight face? Or avoid being jeered off the podium?

34. That's Actually What Henry Ford Said During the Great Depression
There was a brief attempt at an economic recovery, maybe in 1931, during which Ford was quoted as saying "I'm glad the people of this country have finally decided to go back to work."

Ford was a good engineer and entrepreneur, but he absolutely clueless on history, politics and economics. When questioned before Congress, he showed awareness of the American Revolution.

It's frightening how much ignorance there is in high places.

Although I believe Bush's comments were due to duplicity rather than ignorance. It's a pretty transparent way of dodging responsibility. I'm just surprised he can get away with saying such things in public.

Edit to add, this is obviously a message to the lemmings who, as we know, aren't reality based.

>The White House itself will be an imposing force. Using the pulpit of the presidency, Bush rallied support for repeated tax changes and other controversial legislation in his first term, facing down sometimes vigorous pressure-group opposition. White House aides said the conference today is the opening salvo in what will be a massive public relations campaign to raise the popularity of Bush's plan.<

But ever since the election the stock market has gone up. Around 500 points or so.

I read conflicted reports on consumer spending and job creation daily. I've been expecting the economy to take a dive for some time now. How long can it teeter along? When do you think it will become obvious to everyone that the administration's policies are bad for the economic health of the majority of Americans?

If he wanted a goddamned strong dollar he would have continued Clinton's economic policies from the late 90s, not driven our economy into ruin, and not crashed the dollar.

But we all know about the vitriolic hatred that the GOP has for anything Clinton, so to be the unClinton he had to destroy the world's currency markets.
