Rossford cancels Christian rock band; local group was to play at anti-drug school assembly next week.

Rossford High School officials were considering letting a Christian rock band play during an anti-drug assembly next week, but decided yesterday to cancel the performance because of concerns over having religious music played in a public school.

"We are just shutting the whole thing down," Rossford Superintendent Luci Gernot said. "There is some controversy, and I'd rather err on this side."

The school district's law firm, Whalen & Compton of Akron told school officials yesterday that it "wasn't appropriate" to let the band Pawn perform at the school, Ms. Gernot said.

If they wanted to give a positive message, they could have invited any number of milquetoast cover bands to sing sappy/happy songs.

Bringing in a band that SPECIFICALLY sings religious music is basically subjecting kids to a religious sermon/festival.

Some systems have cut music completely, others just whittled away a little more at their shoestring budgets.

Hire a Christian band, anybody who doesn't show up gets labeled as a non-Christian.

You know how these things work.

Why not simply avoid that kind of thing and get a group that doesn't promote itself as "Christian" rock band.

This is kinda like having prayer in schools. It divides those who participate against those who don't and more often than not, the notion is not anything but to try to indoctrinate people into Christianity.

It's Jebus babble backed up by really, really bad music. The basic message is "do what we tell you and you can live in the marshmallow candy world." Example: "Our God is an AWSOME God" repeated endlessly. (compared to whom I wonder?)

In Christian Rock land there is no homeless, no slums, no police brutality or wage slavery. There is also nobody helping those people get on their feet either. It's a safe little cocoon for white kids from the suburbs.

There is GOOD christ-themed music out there. I hear it all the time on NPR and my local community radio station (KZFR). A current favorite lately is going to sleep listening to chant tapes some eastern orthodox guy plays late thursday nights; very soothing.
